Microsoft Quietly Unveils Major Feature Update to Power BI

Microsoft quietly revealed a major feature update to Power BI Desktop in a recent blog post. The update, which went live on May 31, adds some “hotly requested features” according to Filip Karadzic, Senior Program Manager with the technology giant. The long list of feature upgrades to Power BI is headlined by enhancements in the tool’s report view, analytics and data connectivity. Notable enhancements include:

Report View

  • Cuztomizable tooltips
  • Conditional formatting in tables
  • Publish to Pyramid server
  • Scrolling loads more data in charts
  • Keyboard nudging for visuals

Analytics

  • Quick cals; percentage of grand total

Data Connectivity

  • New data connectors (Informix, comScore Digital Analytics, Troux, Planview Enterprise)
  • Improved DB2 connector
  • Text/CSV connector exposes editable settings in preview dialog
  • Improved relational database connectors with Display Schema information
  • Data source settings enhancements
  • Advanced filter rows dialog mode
  • Inline input controls
  • New query parameters
  • More

Gartner included Microsoft’s Power BI in their 2016 Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Data Analytics Platforms this year, naming them a leader in the report. Microsoft has far-and-away the most complete vision of any vendor in the enterprise market today.
