4 Low-Code Development Platform Trends for 2017

Low-code development platforms are transforming the way businesses look at application development, customer engagement, growth and ROI, as this quick and intuitive solution allows users without extensive coding experience to ‘drag and drop’ the creation of new apps and tools. Given new developments within the space, there are several trends sparking interest in these platforms among enterprises and SMBs, positioning low code development as a must-have innovation in 2017.

1. Minimal Hand-Coding – Obviously enough, low-code solutions are bringing the ability to develop apps and tools to businesses whose budget may not afford a front-end development team and as a result, low-code development platforms are gaining popularity among SMB’s. Positioned in the Forrester wave for low code development platforms as an industry leader, vendor, OutSystems provides high-productivity visual development environment that lets new or experienced developers generate optimized Java and .NET code, while enabling complete “under the hood” control over capabilities and code. OutSystems offers “one-click” app publishing, and easy to manage automated DevOps software.

“A person with no experience using front-end development technologies such as JavaScript, Java Server Faces, JQuery, CSS, etc. can build rich web interfaces in a short period of time. An experienced front-end developer can build on what OutSystems provides via properly placed JavaScript and custom CSS. Building back-end components is also very easy.” –  Outsystems QAT Global Assessor Report

2. Experimenting and Testing– Low-code platforms make it easy to experiment with new designs, and also serves as a valuable teaching tool for product functions, and allows users to be hands-on with aspects of the enterprise that they were unable to partake in before. By controlling both the front and back ends, businesses can now manage customer-facing requirements from different stages of the development process. With the ability to develop and test on the fly, a more customer-centric product can be developed and tested as adjustment and enhancements can be made to a better ensure quality of the product.

3. Speed- One of the best things about low-code platforms is that businesses can get started, and shortly thereafter, launch low code creations within the first few days of training- unlike traditional business process management suites.

“Speed is crucial in introducing new disruptive products, engaging and responding to customers across different channels, and adapting existing services based on shifting competitive drivers,” according to the Forrester Wave: Low-Code Development Platforms, report . “This relentless focus on “digital speed” is forcing application development and delivery leaders to reach for new approaches and platforms that enable delivery of new apps in days and weeks, instead of months.”

4. Access- As Low-code platforms require less training, and coding experience, users from all business divisions will find use of low code platforms more accessible, resulting in more employees contributing to app development. “Closing the gap” between businesses who can afford a development team, versus businesses who are are looking to digitize and innovate on a budget.

According to MATS, case studies conducted by the low code platform provider suggest that, “In certain industry sectors such as local government, its all the more important to make less highly trained developers productive, as it’s really hard to attract and retain such talent on public sector pay-scales.”

Because Low-code platforms are easy to learn and use, even for non-technical people, it doesn’t require expensive digital developers to be tied up for weeks building a product, saving money, time and the opportunity to distribute talent to areas that were previously inaccessible.

Conclusion

As the low-code space itself continues to evolve, Forrester predicts that more diverse platform capabilities will temper demand for the new innovation to better serve enterprise needs. Forrester also predicted that bigger technology vendors will adopt low-code platforms as a new offering against traditional business process management suites.

“Right now, the low-code platform space is dominated by smaller emerging vendors,” said Forrester in the Wave’s: Low-Code Development Platforms report. “However, we expect larger more established players, such as IBM and Pegasystems, to begin positioning new offerings that address this space and will help give the use case even more credibility from an enterprise perspective. We hear the imperative for low-code loud and clear.”
