Glassdoor, one of the top job and recruiting websites in the world, recently reported that DevOps is the number-two job in America. This is Glassdoor’s fifth annual 50 Best Jobs in America study. DevOps engineer received a score of 4.6/5, only .2 points behind the winning job, data scientist. This is the second consecutive year DevOps engineer is the runner-up for the best job.
The report highlights the highest scoring jobs based on Glassdoor’s rating system. Scores are determined by combining three factors:
- Number of job openings
- Median salary
- Overall job satisfaction rating
The increase in jobs is evidence at the impact DevOps has on IT teams. DevOps’ growth in popularity has largely been based on word of mouth and publications. People in the IT world constantly hear about the great results of companies like Netflix or Amazon. It’s easy to talk about the benefits of the culture change, and DevOps may seem like a buzzword, but the job demand is there because its impact is undeniable.
The median base salary for DevOps engineer is $105,000, which is the same as last year. One important takeaway from this year’s report is the increase in job openings. 2017 listed 2,725 jobs, while 2018 has gone up to 3,369. This growth is bound to continue, considering the expansion of DevOps throughout the IT world. Enterprises of all sizes are implementing.
DevOps scored a 4.0/5 for job satisfaction. This makes sense considering the nature of DevOps itself. This job is thriving because of a positive culture change in the IT industry. The environment of inclusion and cooperation is bound to build satisfaction. Another component to DevOps is increased automation. Eliminating monotonous tasks will please workers in any industry.
