2021 Gartner Critical Capabilities for Enterprise Backup and Recovery Software Solutions Key TakeawaysThe editors at Solutions Review highlight the key takeaways of Gartner’s 2021 Critical Capabilities for Enterprise Backup and Recovery Software Solutions.

Analyst house Gartner, Inc. has released its 2021 Critical Capabilities for Enterprise Backup and Recovery Software Solutions, companion research to the popular Magic Quadrant report. Used in conjunction with the Magic Quadrant, the Critical Capabilities report is an additional resource that can assist buyers of backup and disaster recovery solutions in finding the products that best fit their organizations.

Gartner defines Critical Capabilities as “attributes that differentiate products/services in a class in terms of their quality and performance.” Gartner rates each vendor’s product or service on a five-point (five points being best) scale in terms of how well it delivers each capability. Critical Capabilities shows you which products are best for each use case and includes a comparison graph for each, along with in-depth descriptions of the various points of comparison.

The study highlights 12 vendors Gartner considers most significant in this software sector and evaluates them against 13 critical capabilities in three use cases (data center environments, cloud environments, and edge environments). The critical capabilities include:

  • Scalability
  • Efficiency
  • Performance
  • Manageability
  • User Experience
  • Ecosystem Integration
  • OS, Hypervisors, and Container Support
  • Application and File Storage Support
  • SaaS Application Support
  • Security
  • Ransomware Protection
  • Reporting and Analytics
  • DR and Orchestration

The editors at Solutions Review have read the report, available here, and pulled out the key takeaways.

Speed of Recovery is Crucial

With the increasing number and growing complexity of ransomware attacks, comprehensive protection with a focus on speed of recovery from large-scale data loss is a key driving factor for clients consider replacing their existing backup and recovery platforms. Additionally, as data volumes continue to grow rapidly and applications become more dynamic, slow backup performance has become a primary concern for many businesses.

Pros and Cons of BaaS

The growing utilization of Backup as a Service (BaaS) offerings are increasing data center and edge support, but they are also often connected to a single cloud provider. Because of this, BaaS platforms can have limited support for workloads hosted in other clouds. However, in general, Backup as a Service is particularly important for cloud environment use cases. Baas platforms can act as cost-effective deployment models in the public cloud and have the ability to automatically tier older backup copies to low-cost archive storage.

Gartner Recommends Prioritizing Ransomware Protection

Whether user data is stored on-prem, in Software as a Service (SaaS) applications, or public cloud Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) providers, Gartner suggests prioritizing protection and recovery from ransomware attacks when selecting new backup software. When choosing a new backup platform, users should consider requiring that the software automate disaster recovery for typical DR events and large-scale recovery from ransomware in order to combat these attacks.
