Today, Digital Realty, data center provider of colocation and interconnection solutions, announce the release of Service Exchange, an interconnection platform that will ensure private, secure and direct connections to multiple cloud service providers. Fun Fact: Digital Realty owns and operates more than 140 properties encompassing over 26 million square feet across 33 global metropolitan areas. That’s no small potatoes, and for an industry facing the ramifications of growing cloud storage popularity, the new Service Exchange platform aims to bridge the gap by facilitating connection to the big three – Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure – as well as telecommunications providers and other Digital Realty customers worldwide. By improving reliability, performance and security, the Service Exchange platform will make access between interconnected services more flexible, and safer than public internet. Rick Villars, Vice President for Datacenter and Cloud at International Data Corporation explains the platforms significance:

“Enterprises undertaking the digital transformation must be able to navigate growing concerns regarding network security issues, changing regulatory requirements, unpredictable performance and escalating operating costs. Digital Realty’s Service Exchange will enable enterprises to tackle these concerns and efficiently manage high-performance interconnections between internal applications and cloud resources in a secure and cost-effective environment.”

Service Exchange will be made available through a global partnership between Digital Realty and Megaport Limited’s U.S. subsidiary, known best for it’s innovative elastic, SDN-based Ethernet fabric which facilitates interconnection between cloud providers and Digital Realty customers.

“We’re delighted to partner with Megaport to bring customers enhanced, easy-to-use interconnection services and SDN-enabled flexibility to their IT operations,” said Chris Sharp, Digital Realty’s Chief Technology Officer. “The Service Exchange creates a simple, flexible and scalable solution for our customers, including those looking to make, jump-start or accelerate their digital transformations.”

The company expects that Service Exchange will be made available across 2016 and 2017,  in 24 data centers across 15 markets, in locations including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Ashburn– all available during the fourth quarter of 2016.
