The 2021 Forbes Cloud 100 recognizes the best private cloud companies in the world. Ranging from small startups to venture-backed cloud behemoths, the fifth annual listing makes mention of popular consumer-facing companies like Stripe, Toast, Squarespace, and others. As part of the selection process for the list, Forbes’ data partner, Bessemer Venture Partners, received hundreds of submissions from the top cloud startups. A panel of judges selected the providers based on four factors: estimated valuation (30 percent), operating metrics (20 percent), people and culture (15 percent), and market leadership (35 percent), which the judging panel then weighed to select, score, and rank the winners.

The 2021 listing isn’t just made up of consumer technology brands, however. The popular award directory also includes a growing number of enterprise technology and software providers. The editors at Solutions Review have perused the 2021 Forbes Cloud 100 and identified these top data protection firms as warranting extra attention. Companies are listed in the order Forbes has them ranked.

24. Rubrik

Rubrik primarily provides data protection and data management in hybrid IT environments with its flagship product, Rubrik Cloud Data Management (RCDM). The platform is a scale-out-architecture-based data protection tool with cloud integration, live mount for Oracle Databases, support for Office 365 backup, and support for SAP HANA backup. Additionally, in 2018 Rubrik acquired Datos IO, a company specializing in data protection of NoSQL databases. The vendor also offers Polaris Radar, a solution that provides ransomware detection and remediation. Rubrik‘s solution is recommended to buyers looking to protect highly virtualized on-prem environments and hybrid environments that leverage Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS). In late 2020, Rubrik acquired Igneous.

41. Cohesity

Cohesity is a data management company that manages, protects, and extracts value from enterprise data. The provider’s flagship tool, Cohesity DataProtect, safeguards a wide range of data sources on a single web-scale platform. The solution can be deployed on-premises on qualified platforms in the data center, public cloud, and on the edge. Additionally, the platform utilizes a scale-out architecture that starts with a minimum of three nodes and scales without disruption by adding nodes to the cluster. Through this solution, users have the ability to use backup data directly on the platform without needing to restore it, which allows for the consolidation of other use cases, including dev/test and analytics.  Recently, Cohesity raised $250 million in Series E funding and is currently valued at $3.7 billion.

90. OwnBackup

OwnBackup is a cloud backup firm centered on Salesforce.com Inc.’s platform. The provider’s service offers secure and automated daily backups of Software as a Service (SaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) data, as well as data comparison and restoration tools for disaster recovery. The company aims to prevent data loss and corruption resulting from human errors, malicious intent, integration errors, and rogue applications. OwnBackup’s data comparison tool enables an administrator to compare data, send a copy to the backup environment, and check it against the most recent valid snapshot. This helps the company identify the Salesforce files in need of recovery to avoid unnecessarily overwriting records with old information. Recently, OwnBackup raised $240 million in Series E funding from Alkeon Capital and seven other investors.
