Research From iland Reveals the Pitfalls of Hyperscale Clouds New research from iland on customer confidence in cloud services has been released. The study found that despite the increase in cloud adoption because of the pandemic, three-quarters of organizations surveyed state that hyperscale IaaS instance types may not meet their cost and performance needs for mission-critical applications, while more than one fifth are not satisfied with critical features of cloud provision including security, availability, performance, and support. The research also found that a shortage of migration resources is delaying or preventing cloud projects for more than 80 percent of respondents.

iland is a global cloud services provider. The vendor offers secure and compliant hosting for Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS), and Backup as a Service (BaaS). iland provides cloud services from its data centers located throughout the Americas, Europe, Australia, and Asia. In the past year, iland has added new fully managed support offerings and expanded the platforms it can support through the use of additional service delivery partners. The vendor’s DRaaS solution, iland Secure DRaaS, allows for replication from virtual and physical environments.

The report, titled The Hidden Pitfalls of Working with Hyperscale Clouds, was conducted in June 2020 among 501 senior IT executives, including CIOs, CISOs, and CTOs, in the UK and the US by independent research firm, Opinion Matters. Those surveyed were asked for their views on security, performance, compliance, and their overall level of confidence in the cloud services they have invested in.

Key findings of the study include:

  • 83 percent say a lack of migration resources and/or time constraints have delayed cloud migration. Among those, 12 percent say it has entirely prevented migration.
  • 24 percent are not confident that hyper-scale clouds can meet performance and availability requirements for specific applications.
  • 23 percent are not confident that production data is protected through backup or disaster recovery in the event of data loss with their cloud service provider.
  • 24 percent are not confident they can get the support they need from their cloud service provider.
  • 53 percent say security is the top factor in cloud supplier selection.
  • 76 percent believe CSPs should assist or actively manage customer data compliance.

In a press statement, Chief Technology Officer at iland, Justin Giardina, said, “the business benefits of moving to the cloud are indisputable, but with 83 percent of those surveyed saying that migration resources are necessary to achieve those benefits it’s clear that customers need to look beyond just the cloud platform and ensure their vendor can offer the supporting services that can reduce risk and improve time to value.”

The study also found that key requirements for cloud service provision include common or unified management across all services. This is a priority for 73 percent of those adopting multi-cloud solutions. Additionally, infrastructure visibility and control are crucial features for 71 percent of respondents.
