What to Do In the Event Of a Cloud Outage

Cloud Backup RisksThe Amazon Web Services cloud recently endured an outage that affected thousands of websites. Enterprises move data to the cloud to ensure that data is protected, but what happens if that cloud goes down? Whether the outage is temporary or not, you still need a plan in place.

So how can you prepare yourself for any situation? First, manage your data by region, Commvault reported.

Manage by Region

The provider wrote about this topic in a recent blog post and while it’s a common practice to keep all of your data in one public cloud, “you need a viewpoint of where the data lives across regions,” according to Commvault.

So if the East Coast sees an outage and you have a copy of your data on both the East and West Coast, you’ve sidestepped that issue and can recover your items at a faster pace. Commvault even suggests keeping a copy of your data in another country, just to be safe.

The blog post went on to say that backup is also critical and that “data services native to the cloud should ensure backups are scheduled in/across/from clouds so your data is available.” And never underestimate automated backups as they are easier to verify.

Know Where Your Data Is

The vendor also pointed out that knowing where your data lives in paramount.

“When you move data to a public cloud, don’t assume data is protected across regions. Actively manage your data storage so you know where your company’s most vital asset – data – is located,” according to Commvault.

Having a dashboard that alerts you to an outage can be priceless when it comes to recovering data.

You’ll need a Plan B

Even if you’ve done everything right, you still need a plan B when it comes to possible outages. You’ll have to ability to shift data between locations and platforms and most native cloud tools don’t provide that option.

“If a source is unavailable, you need to enable recovery in place, out of place, and between different hypervisor platforms,” Commvault reported.

Data Strategy

And finally, you’ll reportedly need a data strategy that encompasses cloud to on-prem and cloud to cloud.
