Sarabacha described in his interview with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/deloitte.wsj.com\/cio\/2012\/11\/29\/disaster-recovery-planning-10-lessons-learned-from-hurricane-sandy\/\">Th<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/deloitte.wsj.com\/cio\/2012\/11\/29\/disaster-recovery-planning-10-lessons-learned-from-hurricane-sandy\/\">e Wall Street Journal<\/a>,\u00a0\u00a0his experience in data disaster recovery after\u00a0Hurricane Sandy, \u00a0reminding business leaders that thoughtful disaster preparation can ensure a\u00a0company\u2019s ability to weather a storm.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because Sandy took out companies\u2019 primary data centers in New York and their back-up data centers in New Jersey, the hurricane demonstrated the need to ideally have two fallbacks, one nearby and one far away.&#8221; Sarabacha continued, \u00a0addressing the fact that not every company can afford multiple data centers, but that any steps that can be taken to secure more than one data site would benefit an enterprise in the face of a disaster.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Equipment Failure.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gene Ruth, a <a href=\"https:\/\/gartner.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gartner<\/a> analyst who covers disaster recovery\u00a0in\u00a0IT research, advisory, and consulting services, advises CIOs to remember that the largest risk to data could be the very equipment intended to protect it. Ruth sites\u00a0equipment failure as the top reason for disaster recovery declarations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most IT disasters have nothing to do with the type of event that wipes out a facility, which is what many organizations consider when they plan for recovery from an IT disaster. This is a message I drive home to clients, especially when they are trying to justify DR to senior management.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comfort in Cloud<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cio.com\/article\/2408869\/it-strategy\/successful-tech-startups-offer-it-tips-for-cios.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CIO.com<\/a> recently interviewed\u00a0Aaron Levie, Box.net&#8217;s CEO and co-founder, where Levie described\u00a0cloud computing as being kind of like backup and disaster recovery&#8217;s &#8216;Land of OZ&#8217;, where it looks for the courage and heart from a place riddled with men behind the curtain. Levie assures CIO&#8217;s that cloud computing is worth investigating as a backup and disaster recovery solution.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cloud vendors have significantly improved their security, reliability and performance. Things have really matured in the last few years.
