\"Gartner's<\/a><\/p>\n

Gartner<\/a> recently unveiled one of their patented Magic Quadrants, this time for 2016’s\u00a0Disaster Recovery as a Service. Gartner says: “Disaster recovery as a service is now a mainstream offering that is supported by more than 250 providers. Data center managers should use this Magic Quadrant to help them evaluate DRaaS providers.”<\/p>\n

The study, which outlines 20\u00a0vendors, provides a comprehensive industry overview, highlighting where solutions in have been, where they’re headed, and what exactly each one offers. Gartner speaks to each solution’s strengths and weaknesses in an attempt to assist solution-seekers with their purchasing decisions. The included companies are grouped into four quadrants based on their ability to execute and on how complete their vision is. The names of each segment are as follows: Niche Players, Visionaries, Challengers, and Leaders.<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, Gartner found that organizations are increasingly selecting\u00a0IT disaster recovery as a whole and DRaaS \u00a0has specifically gained momentum for small and midsize organizations due to improved affordability and functionality. Gartner estimates the DRaaS market will nearly triple in the next three years to a revenue point of $3.4 billion by 2019.<\/p>\n

This report narrows the list of vendors down to just the ones that have a strong global presence and cater to the upper-end mid-market (500-999 employees) and large-enterprise\u00a0(1,000 or more employees) environments. The report also excludes backup solutions that exist to work only with homogeneous environments, such as native tools developed by Microsoft or VMware for their own platforms.<\/p>\n

Though the market as a whole has been steady, there have been significant gains in placement for individual vendors on the Magic Quadrant since last year. Here are the major movements for vendors on both the 2015 and 2016 DRaaS Magic Quadrants:<\/p>\n

IBM, iland and Sunguard\u00a0Availability\u00a0Systems<\/strong><\/h4>\n

IBM has lead the pack for two years running, but iland\u00a0has been inching towards their competitor, Sunguard Availability Systems, and was finally able to surpass Challengers quadrant to join those leaders. Gartner praised iland\u00a0for it’s “high customer reference scores in a number of areas, including effectiveness of onboarding process, secure operations, service quality, quality of technical support, quality of professional services and service feature innovation,” but warns that Iland has, “limited experience with hybrid recovery configuration support”.<\/p>\n

NTT Communications loses points on \u2018ability to execute<\/strong>.\u2019<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The vendor dipped from the \u2018leaders\u2019 quadrant in 2015 into \u2018Visionary\u2019 positioning in 2016, with a significant loss in \u2018ability to execute.\u2019 Gartner warns that \u201cReference customers cited the need for improvement in both the flexibility of NTT Com\u2019s service contracts, as well as in the initial service on-boarding process.\u201d but notes that NTT Com\u2019s DRaaS portal is highly functional and easy to use.<\/p>\n

Eight vendors added<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Gartner added these eight\u00a0vendors,\u00a0Microsoft<\/a>, Recovery Point<\/a>, Tierpoint<\/a>, Carbonite<\/a>, Evolve IP<\/a>,\u00a0Infrascale<\/a>,\u00a0Unitrends<\/a>, and Datto<\/a>. Based on the provider’s services having positive attributes, in addition\u00a0to being a ‘significant player in the market’, regarding\u00a0market presence and\/or technology innovation.<\/p>\n

Axcient\u00a0rises\u00a0in ‘ability to execute’<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Rising from the visionary ranks, Axcient has made its debut in the leaders quadrant,\u00a0<\/strong>for the ability to execute vision. Gartner explained the shift is due to the\u00a0vendors expansion of\u00a0service delivery data centers, now offering one in the U.S. one in Canada, and now expanding presence in Europe and Asia in 2016.\u00a0Yet Gartner warns that, despite expanding professional services organization, “its size is not yet that of several of the other provider participants,” finding\u00a0that\u00a0customers, “Ranked Axcient highly in service quality, secure operations and service cost-effectiveness.”<\/p>\n

Will Axcient challenges\u00a0IBM as Market\u00a0Leaders<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Gartner defines\u00a0market leaders as vendors who \u201ccombine an insightful understanding of the realities of the market, a reliable record, the ability to influence the market\u2019s direction, the capability to attract and keep a following, and the capacity to lead.\u201d<\/p>\n

Given Axcient\u2019s large leap from visionary to leader, it\u2019s easy to imagine that a company in motion, may stay in motion and make that push for completeness of vision to join IBM next year in the Magic Quadrant\u2019s coveted throne.<\/p>\n

Though Gartner identifies market leaders, they are careful to point out that large market leaders are not always the right choice for a business. \u201cA focused, smaller vendor can provide excellent support and commitment to individual customers,\u201d according to the report.<\/p>\n

Outside of a packed Niche Players quadrant, the diagram does look a little sparse. However, backup software, especially solutions tailored for organizations in the enterprise\u00a0will only ascend in popularity in the years ahead. We should see significant headway in enterprise backup adoption by the time Gartner releases the 2017 version of this report.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shop Wisely<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Gartner recognizes that the DRaaS market is becoming a prolific one, yet, businesses who are interested in investing in these solutions may have trouble understanding all that quality disaster recovery services may have to offer–unsure of the questions to ask prospective vendors. The report explains, \u00a0“These providers all offer a wide range of supported server platforms, service onboarding methodologies, recovery time service levels and different pricing policies. In addition, provider contract lengths can range from as little as one month to as much as three years. Master service agreement conditions regarding customers’ rights to terminate for cause can also vary by provider.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
