Is Augmented Analytics the Future of Business Intelligence?

According to analyst house Gartner, Inc., augmented analytics is set to become the hottest trend in business intelligence over the next five-year period. According to the researcher’s latest 2018 Hype Cycle for the Digital Workplace, the next-generation of data analytics will reach mainstream adoption sooner rather than later. Gartner claims that the presence of augmented analytics will soon be so prevalent that citizen data scientists will surpass data scientists in terms of advanced analytic material produced.

In Gartner’s most recent Magic Quadrant for Analytics and Business Intelligence Platforms, the analyst house highlighted augmented analytics as a strategic planning topic, a paradigm that includes natural language query and narration, augmented data preparation, automated advanced analytics, and visual-based data discovery capabilities. These features will be commonplace in the space during the next several-year period, so much so that they will be included in 90 percent of available products.

In tandem with the proliferation of augmented analytics, Gartner has also added citizen data science to the hype cycle, and it will continue to be one of the pillars of BI as the space evolves. Citizen data scientists are largely made up of business analysts and other non-technically trained business personnel that may have experience working within an organization’s data architecture and using software tools to derive business insight from data. Companies are using the citizenry to bridge the gap between their data and the discoveries they acquire from analysis.

The birth of the citizen data scientist has made widespread data democratization across the enterprise possible. The role is really still in its infancy though, and organizations will need to make the judgement as to whether users with no formal training can handle the rigors of a pseudo-scientific position. The hope is that by democratizing data on a mass scale, users will gain confidence in their ability to use the software solutions at their disposal to gain answers to important business questions. Users who are more involved in the nitty gritty of their own work also prove to better understand crucial business processes.

Augmented analytics provides these non-technical users the ability to run complex analysis in a way they couldn’t before. Gartner projects that more than 40 percent of all data science-based tasks will be automated in the next two years, which will enable these users to do even more. Gartner’s Research Director Carlie Idoine adds: “It will make insights from data science and machine learning more accessible and pervasive in the organization. Central to enabling citizen data science are the aforementioned augmented analytics capabilities.”

We’re already beginning to see some of the more forward-thinking solution providers add AI and machine learning-based capabilities to their flagship BI and analytics tools. Many of the major players in the marketplace are moving quickly to ensure they are getting ahead of this trend.
