It’s Official: Amazon Announces Cloud BI Tool QuickSight

Amazon QuickSight

Updating an item we reported on earlier in the week, Amazon made it official Wednesday afternoon at AWS re:Invent with the announcement that the tech giant would indeed be jumping into the business intelligence market, unveiling QuickSight. The service, which will be powered by Amazon Web Services will make it easier for everyone within an organization regardless of their technical prowess to build data visualizations, perform ad-hoc analysis, and swiftly generate business insight from stored data.

Amazon QuickSight uses SPICE, which stands for Super-fast, Parallel, In-memory Calculation Engine in order to perform advanced calculations and generate visuals on-the-fly. QuickSight integrates directly with AWS data services, enables companies to sort through thousands of different users, and delivers fast query performance via SPICE’s query engine.

Amazon is running with the selling point: “Very fast, easy-to-use, cloud-powered business intelligence for 1/10th the cost of traditional BI solutions”, and according to MarketWatch, pricing on Amazon QuickSight starts at $9 dollars per user, per month. It remains to be seen how the enterprise software market will react to the news, but VentureBeat posted yesterday afternoon about how Amazon is now competing with many of its own AWS customers, something we will be sure to hear more about in the coming weeks.
