The guide describes the market in detail, identifies use cases, and highlights some key vendors and their fit with common-use scenarios. It also provides a thorough assessment of the leading process analysis vendors, and points out that EBPA products must have capabilities that go further than just process modeling and help align internal business processes with external consumer interactions.

Gartner defines EBPA as the discipline of business and process mapping aimed at transforming ad improving business performance, with an emphasis on cross-function analysis, and strategic and operational decision support. How does this relate to Business Process Management (BPM) you might ask?

Business Process Analysis is the new BPM

BPM is a holistic approach focused on aligning all aspects of an organizations with the wants and needs of clients, and attempts to improve business processes. It promotes business effectiveness and efficiency while striving for innovation, flexibility and integration with technology.

BPA is the discipline of identifying business needs and determining solutions to business problems. Solutions often include a systems development feature, but may also consist of process improvement, organizational change or policy development.

Both BPM and BPA are aimed at optimizing business performances. Where Business Analysis has a strong IT focus and is more business oriented, BPM has a broader scope of end-to-end process performance and focuses more on execution.

BPM, as a practice, is a little older than BPA – some might say that BPM is a legacy approach. But if you compare the two closely, many BPM tools are presented as BPA tools – so BPM hasn’t disappeared completely, but perhaps just changed its name.
