Cloud management provider 2nd Watch recently released an infographic and blog post on the most popular Amazon Web Services (AWS) products of 2018. They analyzed their customer data to determine what AWS services their buyers were using. 2nd Watch noted that they have over 200,000 instances currently running AWS; these instances were used to collect data for 2nd Watch. From their findings, 2nd Watch concluded that AWS users are interested in emerging technologies and invest heavily into Amazon’s offerings in these fields. In particular, AWS customers are putting money into big data and machine learning services.

2nd Watch’s results found that the top five AWS programs are Amazon Virtual Private Cloud, AWS Data Transfer, Amazon Simple Storage Service, Amazon DynamoDB, and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud. According to their data, 100% of all 2nd Watch customers use all five of these products. 2nd Watch wasn’t surprised by these results, since these products are part of the backbone of AWS. They are also advertised heavily by Amazon.

What really caught 2nd Watch’s attention was the growth of certain products. In particular, they highlighted Amazon Athena (for SQL data analysis), Amazon Glue (for preparing data for analysis), and Amazon SageMaker (for deploying machine learning models). 2nd Watch believes this to be a sign of increasing interest in big data and machine learning applications for cloud users.

“Within [the cloud services market], enterprise IT departments are embracing cloud infrastructure and related services like never before,” Chris Garvey, EVP of Product for 2nd Watch, stated in the blog post. “They’re attracted to tools and technologies that enable innovation, cost savings, faster-time-to-market for new digital products and services, flexibility and productivity. They want to be able to scale their infrastructure up and down as the situation warrants, and they’re enamored with the idea of ‘digital transformation.'”
