Amazon Web Services Rolls Out IoT for General Availability

automatedcloudAmazon has announced that it is bringing the Internet of Things (IoT) to the cloud, and no, they’re not just adlibbing with everyone’s favorite buzzwords.

On Friday, December 18th, Amazon Web Services announced the general availability of its AWS IoT offering, which allows internet-connected devices to connect to the company’s public cloud platform.

According to a blog post from AWS Chief Evangelist Jeff Barr, Amazon wants to simplify the cloud-IoT connection, which they see as “overly complex due to the variety of SDKs and protocols that they need to support in a secure and scalable fashion.”

Amazon first announced the beta launch of AWS IoT at the AWS re:Invent conference in October, and since then, several high-profile customers such as Philips and Scout Alarm have already been using the service, according to the blog post.

Amazon’s engineers have had plenty of firsthand experience dealing with internet connected devices, and their experience with Amazon Robotics, drones (Amazon Prime Air), the Amazon Echo, the Dash Button, and multiple generations of Kindles have “given us a well-informed perspective on how to serve this really important emerging market,” according to Barr.

AWS is by far the biggest public cloud in the game, but they aren’t the only cloud service provider (CSP) angling for the emerging IoT market—Microsoft launched an IoT suite for Azure earlier this year, and Salesforce recently introduced its own IoT Cloud.

AWS IoT is currently available in four AWS regions: US East, US West, EU, and Asia Pacific.
