AWS Finishes 2015 Strong with $2.4B in Sales for Q4

AWSheaderAmazon Web Services (AWS) experienced dramatic growth in the past year, with sales growing from $4.64bn in 2014 to $7.88bn in 2015, according to a company earnings statement. AWS, the public cloud business of online retail giant Amazon.com, announced 722 new services and features in 2015.

AWS brought in $2.4 billion in sales for Q4 2015, a 69 percent year-over-year increase.

That growth rate is lower than Q3 2015 when AWS posted a 78 percent increase in growth, but AWS revenues have never been higher.

The public cloud business brought in $687 million in operating income during the fourth quarter, up from $240 million in Q4 2014. Operating expenditures for Q4 2015 were $1.718 billion, compared to $1.18 billion in Q4 2014.

AWS has been a well-known leader in the public cloud market for some time and many high-profile customers — Spotify and Netflix, for example — use its infrastructure.

In their 2015 Magic Quadrant report for infrastructure as a service (IaaS), market research and analyst house estimated that AWS has five times more compute capacity of all 14 other cloud infrastructure vendors listed in the report combined. That report included Microsoft Azure, VMware, Google, and IBM, Amazon’s primary competition in public cloud infrastructure.
