BetterCloud: 70 Percent of Business Apps are SaaS-Based

According to a report recently released by BetterCloud, companies estimate that 70 percent of the business applications they use today are SaaS-based. This information comes from the 2020 State of SaaSOps report, which surveyed over 670 IT operations and security professionals on how their businesses use Software as a Service applications. The report revealed that SaaS is now dominating the business IT landscape, with a major increase in SaaS apps over the past few years.

Our MSP Buyer’s Guide contains profiles on the top managed cloud service providers for AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, as well as questions you should ask vendors and yourself before buying. We also offer an MSP Vendor Map that outlines those vendors in a Venn diagram to make it easy for you to select potential providers.

BetterCloud observed the exponential growth of SaaS applications in the business world in the past six years. In 2020, businesses estimate that 70 percent of the applications they use for corporate tasks are SaaS-based and that by 2025, 85 percent of business apps will be SaaS. On average, a business uses 80 IT-sanctioned SaaS apps, a dramatic increase from 16 apps in 2017, and eight apps in 2015.

This increase in SaaS applications has not come without challenges, however. Only around half of IT organizations are confident in their ability to identity unsanctioned SaaS usage on company networks, even though around three-quarters see unsanctioned apps as a security risk. Also, the process of offboarding employees from corporate SaaS apps is slow, with an average of 7.12 hours required to remove one employee from all SaaS apps — time that could be spent on more strategic projects.

In a press release on PR Newswire, BetterCloud’s CEO David Politis stated: “In the earlier part of the year, organizations around the world were faced with powering their entire workforces from home and turned to SaaS to make the shift with as little disruption to productivity as possible. Up until this point, most companies were adopting a cloud-first approach for their IT infrastructure — that strategy has now shifted to cloud-only. But SaaS growth at this scale has also brought about challenges, as our 2020 State of SaaSOps report clearly outlines. The findings also show increased confidence and reliance on SaaSOps as the path forward to reigning in SaaS management and security.”
