Hybrid Cloud Platforms: What Are They and Why Do They Matter?

Hybrid Cloud Platforms What Are They and Why Do They Matter

Hybrid Cloud Platforms What Are They and Why Do They MatterCloud Platforms are quickly becoming the most popular and most efficient way for enterprises to store and backup data. Cloud storage is popular because it allows employees to be able to work from anywhere and makes it more convenient to use mobile devices in the network. The newest and fastest growing form of cloud platform is the Hybrid Cloud Platform, but what is a hybrid cloud platform?

A hybrid cloud platform is a combination of a public cloud provider like Google Cloud and a private cloud platform, specially built for that enterprise. The public and private clouds are separate, but they communicate over an encrypted connection that keeps the data secure.

The fact that the public and private clouds are independent is important because it allows the company to store more sensitive data on the private cloud, while less sensitive data can go on the public cloud where it is easier to access for employees from anywhere. This is important because it means that companies don’t have to store privileged data on the public cloud long-term.

One benefit of going hybrid, according to an article by James Sanders for ZDnet, is having an on premise private infrastructure that is directly accessible. This means that the sensitive data is not pushed through the very public internet. With the threats of Net Neutrality and other issues with the internet, it’s important for a company to depend on itself to secure the more important data.

Hybrid clouds are also beneficial for the opposite reason; in the chance that a business has a melt down and something goes wrong with the private server, there is always an option to temporarily store the data from the private cloud on the public cloud so it is not lost.

Having a smaller amount of priority data on the private cloud, and having more room for data on the public cloud also gives companies room to grow without having to rethink their cloud storage strategy. Most public cloud platforms offer scalability options either for free, or for just an increase in rate. The public cloud gives more space to store data from a growing company.

Another less obvious benefit of a hybrid cloud platform is connectivity in the workplace. Internal tasks from messaging, scheduling and managing files, to connecting devices like printers and scanners is not easy and sometimes not possible to do with public cloud platforms.

Instead of limiting your enterprise or business to just a public or private cloud platform, it is possible and even common to have the best of both worlds and integrate them together.
