Microsoft and AT&T Announce Partnership for Azure and 5G Technologies

Technology and communication giants Microsoft and AT&T today announced a partnership that would bring AT&T’s public cloud initiatives to Microsoft Azure. This partnership is a multi-year alliance where the two companies will unite to develop new technologies in several vectors, including cloud, artificial intelligence (AI), and 5G. As part of this deal, AT&T will migrate non-network infrastructure applications to Azure and provide its workforce with cloud-based Microsoft 365 technologies.

AT&T’s alliance with Microsoft comes as a part of their goal to become a “public cloud first” company. This initiative seeks to migrate most of their non-network workloads to the public cloud by 2024. By doing so, AT&T can focus on their core networking capabilities and provide powerful cloud-based technologies for their workforce. This is not the only cloud deal AT&T has recently announced; just yesterday, AT&T and IBM announced a cloud-based partnership as well.

“AT&T is at the forefront of defining how advances in technology, including 5G and edge computing, will transform every aspect of work and life,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. “The world’s leading companies run on our cloud, and we are delighted that AT&T chose Microsoft to accelerate its innovation. Together, we will apply the power of Azure and Microsoft 365 to transform the way AT&T’s workforce collaborates and to shape the future of media and communications for people everywhere.”

Under this partnership, Microsoft and AT&T will also work together to design future computing and networking technologies – specifically, edge computing and 5G networking. AT&T is preparing to fully launch its 5G solutions, which they estimate to happen by the first half of 2020. Meanwhile, Microsoft will leverage their 5G developments and their own edge computing solutions to deliver faster and closer computing power to businesses.
