Tech industry giant Microsoft today announced new capabilities for their Internet of Things app platform IoT Central and their cloud platform Azure to help enterprises deploy secure IoT deployments. These new features, according to Microsoft, “help customers embrace IoT as a core strategy to drive better business outcomes, improve safety and address social issues.”
Microsoft has upgraded IoT Central’s capabilities to include 11 new industry-focused application templates, plug and play support, more data export options, and custom user roles. The platform will also receive a new pricing plan in 2020, which Microsoft says will help make pricing more predictable for customers. For Microsoft Azure, the company improved Azure IoT Hub message enrichment and several new features for Azure Time Series Insights; this includes multilayered IoT data storage, flexible cold storage, richer analytics, and integration with Power BI.

These new features are just the latest in Microsoft’s IoT initiatives following their announcement of a $5 billion investment in IoT development in 2018. Over a year into their four-year plan, Microsoft has partnered with several companies to help them leverage IoT and AI solutions through Azure. They’ve launched over 100 services through their IoT platform and recently released a report on IoT solution usage that found lack of IoT expertise is the biggest hurdle for adopting an Internet of Things infrastructure.
