NTT Data: Six in 10 Execs Struggle to Change Business Culture for the Cloud

According to research released today by NTT Data, six in 10 executives say they struggle with adjusting their business culture when moving applications to the cloud. These results come from NTT Data’s study “Every Cloud Has a Culture Lining,” which surveyed 252 executives of companies based in the U.S. and Canada. NTT Data found that 60 percent of respondents admit that solving technical problems of moving apps onto the cloud is easier than solving people-related issues.

“Cloud adoption is critical to create a more agile, innovative business, but leaders must address cultural challenges to successfully modernize,” said Emily Lewis-Pinnell, NTT Data’s Vice President, Cloud and Application Transformation.. “Our findings show only a small minority are taking the appropriate cultural change management steps, but those who are report greater agility, increased efficiency and stronger security.”

In addition to cultural changes, NTT Data also noted that in order to stay competitive, a company needs to adjust its cloud app strategy beyond traditional lift-and-shift methods. NTT Data cites that next-generation cloud leaders focus on modern applications, or apps designed specifically for the cloud. To highlight this, the report shows how cloud leaders outperform other companies regarding cloud applications. For example, while 38 percent of all respondents said they had success with app flexibility and agility, 66 percent of those NTT Data identified as cloud leaders had the same level of success.

“Our findings highlight that leaders recognize both the challenges and benefits of a cloud transformation, but cultural shifts are still critical to accelerate the transition and achieve their desired results,” said Lisa Woodley, NTT Data’s Vice President, Customer Experience. “Leaders must develop a holistic employee experience strategy to identify and manage people-related challenges, placing end users at the heart of cloud transformation.”
