Many solution providers make their entire business model helping users get more out of AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and more. Workload and security solutions tend to take priority here. However, cost optimization should never be overlooked.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Cloud costs often become higher than expected. A variety of issues cause this. To learn how to better optimize cloud costs, we chatted with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitasglobal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Unitas Global<\/a> founder and CTO, Grant Kirkwood. Read more about them at the bottom of this post.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>How can executives balance cloud costs and desired outcomes?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">It starts with clearly defining the desired outcomes and aligning the entire team around those goals. Companies often fail to gain alignment, which leads to scope creep and increased costs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Outcomes must be specific and constrained. We find that companies look to leverage the cloud for one of two broad themes. This depends on their overall digital competency:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li><strong>Operational improvement and\/or efficiency: <\/strong>Primarily tactical\/practical in nature, i.e.; shutting down existing data centers, reducing cost, optimizing workloads.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strategic, transformational, revenue opportunities:<\/strong> Strategic in nature, i.e.; leveraging cloud technology to transform the business or create new revenue opportunities, improve customer experiences, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">With clear outcomes and scope defined, a plan with specific milestones, timing, and budget can be created. Tracking progress against the plan ensures costs remain within budget.<\/p>\n<div class=\"widget\"><div class=\"aside-card\">\t\t\t<div class=\"textwidget\"><p><a class=\"msp-speedbump\" title=\"Download link to Managed Service Providers Buyers Guide\" href=\"https:\/\/solutionsreview.com\/cloud-platforms\/managed-service-provider-buyers-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1682\" src=\"https:\/\/solutionsreview.com\/cloud-platforms\/files\/2018\/07\/Managed-Service-Providers-Speedbump-1.jpg\" alt=\"Download Link to Managed Service Providers Buyers Guide\" width=\"771\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>What overlooked factors drive cloud costs up?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Studies suggest that 20-40 percent of cloud spend goes wasted or under-utilized.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Over-provisioning<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Traditional on-premise workloads are most often \u201cthin provisioned.&#8221; <span class=\"veryhardreadability\">Virtual machines are <\/span><span class=\"adverb\">purposely<\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"> over-provisioned, with the unused capacity going back into the pool on a variable, real-time, minute-by-minute basis<\/span>. This makes sense for companies that own the underlying hardware. It allows them to use the hardware at <span class=\"complexword\">maximum<\/span> efficiency. <span class=\"veryhardreadability\">In an environment where the company owns the underlying hardware, this makes perfect sense as it allows for the most efficient use of the hardware while still allowing individual virtual machines to burst when needed<\/span>. <span class=\"complexword\">However<\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\">, it means that individual virtual machines are <\/span><span class=\"adverb\">consistently<\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"> under-utilized when measured against the provisioned resources on a VM-by-VM basis<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span class=\"hardreadability\">Studies have suggested that the average CPU <\/span><span class=\"complexword\">utilization<\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"> of VMs in an enterprise environment may be no more than 30%<\/span>. In a private environment, this doesn\u2019t carry a cost. <span class=\"complexword\">However<\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\">, when migrating these traditional on-premise workloads to public cloud, companies often provision resources on a like-for-like 1:1 resource basis, forgetting they lose the benefit of \u201cthin\u201d provisioning<\/span>. In other words, they\u2019re paying for 100% of the provisioned VM capacity even if they\u2019re only actually using 50%.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Orphans<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In today\u2019s fast-paced world, resources <span class=\"passivevoice\">are provisioned<\/span> on an as-needed basis. <span class=\"veryhardreadability\">While this is convenient and helps <\/span><span class=\"complexword\">accelerate<\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"> development and deployment, it means that tracking resources require a very strict adherence to process and enforcement of governance tools<\/span>. Too often, one week\u2019s project ends on a Friday, with some \u201cleftover\u201d resources left online to <span class=\"passivevoice\">be cleaned<\/span> up later. <span class=\"veryhardreadability\">Monday arrives, and a new project lands on your desk with a looming deadline, and last week\u2019s \u201cclean up\u201d never happens leaving orphaned resources online costing money<\/span>. <span class=\"hardreadability\">Eliminating this takes diligent governance, processes, and tools, which companies often don\u2019t have in place until it\u2019s too late<\/span>. <span class=\"veryhardreadability\">Identifying orphans requires tooling and patience, but we <\/span><span class=\"adverb\">consistently<\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"> find that companies have more leftovers than they think<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Transfer costs<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Moving data in, out, and within the cloud costs money. The biggest cost is often data to the internet, sometimes called egress costs. Transfer costs between regions in a cloud or services within the cloud also drive up cost. Data transfer to storage services might cost as much as egress cost. Also, we often find companies surprised at how quickly those costs mount. With expensive egress costs, companies can save significant money with a dedicated connectivity strategy.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0<strong>Where are organizations lacking visibility to prepare for future needs?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Inventory management in public cloud is a challenge, particularly at scale. <span class=\"veryhardreadability\">The cloud providers don\u2019t make identifying under-utilized resources easy (one could argue that is by design) and thus a whole cottage industry of companies exists, developing software tools to solve this problem<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">There&#8217;s also a retroactive side to this. Most companies get started with cloud in a small way and then <span class=\"adverb\">progressively<\/span> add bit by bit. <span class=\"hardreadability\">Before long, they <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\">are overwhelmed<\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"> with the amount of money they\u2019ve spent on cloud, and they have to scramble to bring down costs<\/span>. <span class=\"veryhardreadability\">Very few companies take the time up front to <\/span><span class=\"complexword\">implement<\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"> the tools needed to <\/span><span class=\"adverb\">proactively<\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"> manage cost and future growth, and it\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"adverb\">really<\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"> difficult to do this after the fact<\/span>. <span class=\"hardreadability\">If you don\u2019t do this up front, you don\u2019t have visibility into what\u2019s happening, which leads to cloud sprawl and wasted money<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Can you share more about Unitas Global and how it helps companies optimize cloud spend?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">As more and more mission-critical applications move to the cloud, Unitas Global is designing high-performance network access strategies that connect users directly to their data and bypass the oft-overlooked expensive egress charges.
