When asked what challenges their business was facing after adopting a cloud native infrastructure, nearly 50% of enterprise IT professionals responded that they had a lack of necessary skills. This comes from the “How Companies Adopt and Apply Cloud Native Infrastructure”<\/a> report released today by O’Reilly<\/a>. The report interviewed 590 tech practitioners, managers, and CxOs around the world, 68% of whom responded that they had adopted a cloud native environment in some capacity.<\/p>\n

O’Reilly broke down the respondents who adopted a cloud native infrastructure into three categories based on their cloud experience: new, early, and sophisticated. For both new and early adopters (<1 to 3 years), lack of skills<\/a>, company culture, and migrating from monolith deployments were the three biggest barriers to successful cloud native adoption. For sophisticated adopters (3+ years), budget and cost, technical infrastructure, and security and compliance were the largest challenges.<\/p>\n

The survey also investigated the businesses’ success in adopting a cloud native infrastructure. Over 70% of sophisticated adopters stated their adoption was either “mostly successful” or “extremely successful.” No sophisticated respondents believed their adoption was unsuccessful. By contrast, the majority of new adopters (about 52%) said their adoption was only “partially successful,” while most early adopters responded with either “partially successful,” “mostly successful,” or “successful.”<\/p>\n

These findings suggest that in the first few years of an enterprise’s cloud native journey, they must overcome the obstacle of adapting to the cloud. Cloud adaptation involves not just migrating workflows and data to the cloud, but also changing an enterprise’s mindset in regards to operating tasks. If the company’s initial cloud transformation is successful, then the major challenges become more technical and financial. Essentially, the company now has to optimize their cloud environment in order to make it as efficient as possible.<\/p>\n
