Jeff Bezos, Amazon\u2019s founder and chief executive, called AWS a $5 billion business that\u2019s \u201cstill growing fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now AWS has been a well-known leader in the public cloud market for some time, \u00a0and many high-profile customers \u2014 Spotify and Netflix, for example \u2014 use its infrastructure. But just how big is AWS? We wanted to find out, so we dug through our fact books and came up with 15 statistics that demonstrate the power that Bezos and co. wield over the public cloud computing market.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strong Revenue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Amazon reported <strong>$5.16 billion<\/strong> in AWS revenues for 2014. AWS sales make up <strong>7%\u00a0<\/strong>of the company&#8217;s total sales, roughly equal to the percentage\u00a0of total sales owing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jeffbercovici\/2014\/02\/10\/amazon-vs-book-publishers-by-the-numbers\/\" target=\"_blank\">books<\/a> (both ebooks and physical), which, you may remember, built the foundation of the company 21 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, AWS reported <strong>$1.566 billion<\/strong> in sales for Q1 2015\u2014a <strong>49%<\/strong> increase over the previous year. The company also reported an operating income of <strong>$391 million<\/strong> in Q2 2015, a massive increase from the <strong>$77 million\u00a0<\/strong>reported for Q2 2015.<\/p>\n<p><b>Lion&#8217;s Share\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud computing is a fast growing market, jumping 33% in 2015 to become an estimated $16.5 billion market, according to research firm Gartner.<\/p>\n<p>With over <strong>one million<\/strong> private customers, and <strong>600 government<\/strong> agencies using Amazon&#8217;s public cloud, it&#8217;s unsurprising that the company now controls a massive portion of the worldwide public cloud market\u2014<strong> 29%<\/strong> to be exact.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Massive Infrastructure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So how exactly is AWS planning to accommodate all of those customers? With their massive infrastructure, of course!<\/p>\n<p>While some competitors have tried to make <a href=\"https:\/\/solutionsreview.com\/cloud-platforms\/microsoft-puffs-up-chest-declares-its-cloud-biggest-in-geographic-availability\/\" target=\"_blank\">oblique references<\/a> to their clouds being &#8220;geographically largest,&#8221; the general consensus is that AWS operates the world&#8217;s largest public cloud infrastructure. In fact, according to research and analysis firm Gartner Inc., AWS boasts \u201cover <strong>10 times more cloud IaaS compute capacity<\/strong> in use than the aggregate total of the other 14 providers\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/solutionsreview.com\/cloud-platforms\/whats-changed-gartners-2015-cloud-iaas-magic-quadrant\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gartner&#8217;s 2015 IaaS Magic Quadrant report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That compute capacity is distributed across <strong>11 AWS regions worldwide<\/strong>, with <strong>over 30 data centers<\/strong> in total. Each region contains <strong>two to five AWS Availability zones<\/strong>, with <strong>less than a millisecond<\/strong> between them.
