\"PAM_Gartner_MG\"Even as enterprise adoption of public cloud services hits record numbers<\/a>, security concerns remain the<\/a> most<\/a> common<\/a> excuse for avoiding the use of public cloud services. And now, renowned enterprise technology research and analysis firm Gartner, Inc. has identified what they predict to be the greatest threat to cloud security in the next five years, and the answer is, well, a little awkward.<\/p>\n

According to Gartner\u2019s report, Top Strategic Predictions for 2016 and Beyond: The Future Is a Digital Thing<\/a>, <\/em>95 percent of cloud security failures through 2020 will be the customer\u2019s fault<\/em>.<\/p>\n

That means the biggest threat to your cloud is you, according to Gartner analyst Jay Heiser.<\/p>\n

\u201cHigh levels of concern about cloud service provider security postures have become counterproductive,\u201d writes Heiser. \u201cThey are distracting attention from the need to establish the organizational, security and governance processes required to prevent cloud security and compliance mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead of \u2018naively\u2019 believing that SaaS providers are one hundred percent responsible for their customers data security, Heiser says, companies need to ensure that their employees responsibly leverage cloud services.<\/p>\n

By attempting to put the burden of security on the cloud service provider alone, companies are failing to \u201ctake a strategic approach to cloud computing,\u201d according to the report.<\/p>\n

So what are the market implications of this news? According to Gartner, growing recognition of the enterprise\u2019s responsibility for the appropriate use of the public cloud is reflected in the growing market for cloud control tools. By 2018, 50% of enterprises with more than 1,000 users will be using products provided by cloud access security brokers.<\/p>\n

Gartner\u2019s report, which features lots of futuristic terms like \u2018roboboss,\u2019 \u2018nexus of forces,\u2019 and my personal favorite \u2018robotrend,\u2019 is intended to give businesses a reference on which to base strategic plans.<\/p>\n

Of course, like all analyses of the future, it\u2019s best to take this report with a grain of salt. Gartner recommends that businesses \u201cposition predictions with longer time horizons as having a lower probability of coming true than those with shorter time horizons.\u201d
