DataRobot is set to acquire Redwood City-based data preparation provider Paxata, according to a press release on the company’s website. As part of the acquisition, the two companies have released an industry-first integration into DataRobot’s AI Catalog, making it easier for customers to prepare data for machine learning. The teams will also begin bolstering DataRobot’s plans for AI-based data preparation in 2020. DataRobot will continue to support existing Paxata customers, and Paxata data preparation will still be offered as a standalone product.

Paxata’s Adaptive Information Platform offers data integration, data quality, and governance capabilities for business analysts. It features flexible deployment options and self-service operation. The Paxata Self-Service Data Prep Application is built on a visual user interface that has familiar spreadsheet metaphors so users don’t have to learn an entirely new tool. It also includes Assisted Intelligence to infer the meaning of data. Adaptive Workload Management provides organizations the choice to define their own interactive data volumes, and unlike tools that limit interactive data preparation to small samples, Paxata enables users to size the dataset per tenant.

The news comes on the heels of DataRobot’s newest $206 million-dollar Series E funding round which came in September. DataRobot offers an automated machine learning platform for data scientists of all skill levels to build and deploy accurate machine learning models. The tool automates the entire modeling lifecycle, enabling users to build predictive models. DataRobot searches through millions of combinations of algorithms, data pre-processing steps, transformations, features, and tuning parameters to spit out the best model for your data.

Paxata represents DataRobot’s third acquisition of 2019 and builds on the company’s previous acquisition of ParallelM. DataRobot also bought data collaboration platform provider Cursor in February. The official release refers to Paxata as the “key piece of the end-to-end platform puzzle.”

In a media statement about the news, Paxata Co-founder and CEO Prakash Nanduri said: “No one platform served the needs of enterprises when it came to finding, prepping, consuming, and governing data and simultaneously building, deploying, and maintaining AI solutions at an enterprise scale – until today. We’ve been working with DataRobot to build the next-generation integrated experience and going forward, our combined entity will have the global scale to deliver on our joint vision.”
