Data science is the number-one job in America, according to a new report by Glassdoor, one of the largest job websites in the world. In its annual 50 Best Jobs in America for 2017 study, data science claimed the top spot for the second year in a row. In similar fashion, DevOps Engineer, Data Engineer and Analytics Manager were also included in the top-five.

A data scientist spends most of their time communicating and fine-tuning models and metrics to sell a story that can drive action. In the next 10 years, as data preparation becomes more structured industry-wide, data science work will become more specialized, fracturing more clearly across technical and business domain specialties.

The report highlights the best jobs based on each one’s overall Job Score, which is part of Glassdoor’s proprietary rating system. The jobs that made the report stand out across all three of the following three categories:

  • Earning potential based on median annual base salary
  • Job satisfaction rating
  • Number of available positions

Data scientists earn a median base salary of $110,000. The profession is in high-demand as well, as is evident based on the number of openings at the time the report was authored (4,184). The number of available positions was far and away the most of any of the professions covered in the report, which speaks to the demand for senior-level data people in the marketplace. Glassdoor expanded its Best Jobs in America list to 50 jobs, up from 25 in 2016. Tech jobs make up 14 of Glassdoor’s 50 Best Jobs in America for 2017, more than any other specialty.

In a statement, Glassdoor’s Chief Economist Dr. Andrew Chamberlain added: “Nearly half the list is comprised of jobs within the fast growing technology, healthcare, and finance industries. In particular for tech jobs, companies across all industries are hiring workers for these needed positions, including employers in healthcare, finance, manufacturing, retail and more. Any organization today with a mobile app, web presence or digitized data are struggling to fill jobs like data scientists, software engineers and mobile developers.”
