Taking Ownership of Enterprise Data Management

Data Management

Data Management can sometimes prove to be an overwhelming process. There are inherent risks in moving, mixing and matching data to meet the needs of an enterprise. Before going to market to select the Data Management or data warehouse framework that matches up with your data architecture best. According to information week.com’s Jeff Bertolucci, organization is key: “Every organization of any size has problems with data inconsistency. Data is captured in multiple applications and separate parts of the organization, and is imperfectly synchronized, its quality and timeliness distinctly variable.”

Mission and Scope

How large is your enterprise? In a perfect world, the data you store should help you gain a better understanding of what it is that your customers are looking for. Information Difference sums up the data management landscape nicely, proving that you’re not alone in the mission to harness the power of your data: “Master data stretches across the business like a web, so in a complex global organization getting full control of master data is a major exercise, often taking many years. Most companies opt to tackle this in stages, dealing with specific domains such as customer or product data, or with slowly changing master data such as currency and country codes, which is often termed reference data.”

Strategy

They key to mastering Data Management is by doing so as a team. Often times, IT teams will be held responsible, but as Arvind Singh, co-founder and CEO of Utopia, a Chicago-based enterprise data solutions provider suggests; this mentality will make it hard manage: “As long as issues with data are seen as “an IT problem”, then it will be hard to make progress. Singh advises that the plan must be comprehensive. “In other words, the technology platform needs to be reusable. It has to be scalable.” Singh continues, “Real-time governance is essential. The IT tools must not only be capable of doing the usual cleansing, validation, integration, and enrichment efforts, they also must work in real time and be available for future use.”

Choosing a Product

Here’s where the [fun] begins. Choosing the right Data Management solution may seem like an overwhelming task at first. However, the best place to start is from within, taking a good, hard look at the current structure of your data environment to find out just what is that you’ll need. Singh concludes: “This becomes pretty significant when you start talking about what kind of technology platform to put in place to manage your master data,” Singh said. “Master data management faces additional challenges because data is generated at all times and in a variety of places. In the past, you were creating master data in a very structured environment, generally inside the office. Today, you’re also creating data through mobile devices, or on the cloud.”
