The addition of the ActiveScale product line will enable Quantum to bring object storage and erasure coding technology to its overall data storage solutions portfolio. Quantum will provide continued post-closing support for ActiveScale products, as well as invest in and enhance the solution for its customers. Quantum has been selling and supporting ActiveScale for more than five years.

Our Data Storage Vendors Buyer’s Guide helps you evaluate the best solution for your use case and features profiles of the leading providers, as well as a category overview of the marketplace.

Western Digital ActiveScale is an enterprise-grade data storage solution. The product features two-site asynchronous replication and the ability to deploy selected Docker containers on the platform itself. The solution is best for large and or unstructured data management, analytic deployment, content distribution, archive, and backup when a turnkey appliance is the preferred delivery model. Western Digital leverages combined resources like disk storage manufacturing and supply chain to deliver value on ActiveScale hardware. Western Digital is able to optimize drive size and placement within a rack at the point of manufacturing.

AcriveScale can serve a number of different use cases like object storage in media production, enterprise archiving and long-term retention, genomics and life sciences, and for video surveillance. Quantum StorNext is already certified with many public and private object stores and will remain an open ecosystem of third-party stores. StorNext also offers the ability to move data to third-party object tiers, according to the provider.

In a media statement about the news, Quantum President and CEO Jamie Lerner said: “As Quantum returns to a growth path, we will be evaluating strategic acquisitions that bolster our technology portfolio. Object storage software is an obvious fit with our strategy, our go-to-market focus, and within our technology portfolio.  We are committed to the product, and to making ActiveScale customers successful, and we look forward to engaging with them to solve their most pressing business challenges around storing and managing unstructured data.”
