Everywhere you look, the assumption is the same: build more, build bigger, build faster. More land. More power. More cooling. More concrete. More servers. More money.

The logic seems obvious enough. AI models require enormous computing resources, so of course, the future belongs to massive data centers. Case closed.

Except it is not that simple.

I think there is a real chance we are watching a mania unfold, one that confuses current demand with permanent necessity. That is a costly mistake in any industry. In technology, it can become an especially expensive one, because the ground shifts so quickly. What looks essential today can look bloated tomorrow.

That is the part of the discussion that is getting far too little attention.

When Growth Turns Into Herd Behavior

Right now, the market narrative rewards scale. If one giant facility is good, 10 must be better. If a company can announce a huge investment in compute capacity, it signals seriousness. It tells investors, customers, and competitors that they are ready for the AI future. But signaling is not the same thing as strategy. Sometimes it is just herd behavior in a nicer suit.

We have seen this movie before. In tech, periods of genuine innovation often attract a second wave of overreaction. Once a breakthrough becomes real, money pours in not only to support practical growth, but to chase prestige, fear of missing out, and simplistic assumptions about what comes next. The result is often overbuilding. Not because the underlying technology is fake, but because people extrapolate too mechanically from a single moment in time.

AI is no exception.

Yes, today’s frontier systems can be computationally expensive. Yes, there is strong demand for high-performance infrastructure. But it is a mistake to assume that this automatically means ever-larger centralized data centers will remain the dominant answer for the long haul.

Efficiency Changes the Equation

Why? Because the technology itself is already moving toward greater efficiency.

Better algorithms matter. Better architectures matter. Better methods for training, inference, compression, routing, and specialization matter. Hybrid approaches matter. Edge computing matters. The more mature AI becomes, the more pressure there will be to do more work with fewer resources, not more. That is how good engineering usually works. Systems improve. Waste gets cut. Bottlenecks shrink. Costs become harder to justify.

That should not be a controversial point. It should be the baseline expectation.

And yet a surprising amount of infrastructure planning seems to assume the opposite. It assumes that demand for centralized, energy-intensive facilities will continue expanding in a near-linear way. That is a risky bet. If the models become more efficient, if more processing moves closer to the user, if specialized systems outperform brute-force general ones for many tasks, then some of these giant facilities may turn out to be badly oversized for the world they are meant to serve.

That is when the “ghost town” problem starts to sound less like a metaphor and more like a balance sheet issue.

The Real Cost of Overbuilding

A data center is not a harmless placeholder. It is not a paper projection in a pitch deck. It is a physical commitment with a long tail: land use, electricity consumption, water demand, local infrastructure strain, and large sums of capital that could have gone elsewhere. When these projects are overbuilt, the cost is not confined to one company making a bad call. Communities absorb part of the burden. Utilities absorb part of the burden. The environment absorbs part of the burden. Eventually, taxpayers and ratepayers often do, too.

That is why this conversation should not be framed as anti-innovation versus pro-innovation. That binary is lazy. The real issue is whether we are building intelligently or simply building at scale because scale feels reassuring.

There is a difference.

A smarter approach would begin with a little humility. We should admit that AI infrastructure needs are not static. They are moving targets. The systems, models, and deployment patterns we see today are not the final form of the technology. So why are so many decisions being made as if they are?

Build for What AI Is Becoming

Instead of treating giant centralized facilities as the only serious answer, organizations should be asking tougher questions. What workloads truly require that level of compute concentration? Which tasks can be handled through more distributed approaches? How quickly are efficiency gains changing the equation? What happens if utilization falls short of forecasts? What happens if the infrastructure we are building for today’s models is poorly matched to tomorrow’s?

Those are not anti-growth questions. They are the questions responsible adults ask before spending billions of dollars.

There is also a broader cultural problem here. In tech, we often equate bigger with more advanced. That is not always true. Sometimes bigger is just bigger. Sometimes it reflects inertia rather than insight. And sometimes it becomes a monument to yesterday’s assumptions.

The irony is that AI, at its best, should help us use resources more intelligently. It should help us optimize, refine, and reduce waste. So it is worth asking: what are we doing if the supporting infrastructure is being built with the subtlety of a land grab?

I am not arguing that data centers are going away. They are clearly important, and they will remain important. But importance is not the same thing as unlimited expansion, and present demand is not proof of permanent demand. Those are very different claims.

The industry should be wary of locking itself into a vision of the future based on maximum consumption. If AI succeeds, it will not only become more capable. It will also become more efficient, more targeted, and more flexible in where and how it runs. That should shape our infrastructure decisions now, before momentum hardens into waste.

Because once you build too much of the wrong thing, you do not get points for enthusiasm. You just get underused facilities, stranded capital, and a lot of people asking why no one saw it coming.

We should see it coming.

Synsira’s Jonathan Schaeffer offers commentary on why the data center boom could become tomorrow’s ghost town problem.
