Headlines have shifted from touting the inevitable, transformative power of this technology to the increasing costs and returns of AI at an enterprise scale. In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ceoworld.biz\/2026\/06\/17\/56-of-ceos-arent-seeing-roi-from-ai-heres-what-theyre-missing\/%23google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\">PwC\u2019s latest Global CEO Survey<\/a>, 56% of respondents reported they had achieved no cost or revenue benefit from AI. There may be a little whiplash seeing a headline like that if you\u2019ve only been focused on the more breathless headlines about AI\u2019s impact. But I think the current moment is less about what AI can do, and more about the organizational readiness of companies to be able to realize its benefits. After all, the most efficient AI tool will always be the one that people know how to use effectively.<\/p>\n<h4 dir=\"auto\"><strong>Defining Success: Humans + AI<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">For most businesses beginning to implement AI, its potential value as a tool lies in unlocking efficiency and business intelligence at scale within set parameters. By leveraging technology, enterprises can process large volumes of data and power complex workflows. However, those parameters and workflows must be designed and overseen by humans. The talent and operational maturity of a business are therefore key. Becoming an \u201cAI native\u201d company is not about the latest agentic platforms, or following the vanguard of this rapidly evolving technology. Instead, it starts with a team that understands how AI adds value, along with the processes and systems that capture that value.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"auto\"><strong>The AI Skill Gap<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">When investments in AI outpace workforce and organizational readiness to use those tools, businesses start to leave money on the table. This human, operational element of enterprise AI poses a challenge. Intuitively, most of us understand this link and the importance of a skilled team in translating technology to business results. Almost 90% of the senior leaders surveyed for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.datacamp.com\/blog\/the-state-of-data-and-ai-literacy-in-2026-definitions-statistics-and-the-ai-skills-gap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\">DataCamp\u2019s 2026 State of Data &amp; AI Literacy<\/a>\u00a0report rank data literacy skills as more important than table stakes capabilities like writing or project management, with AI skills a close second. In the same survey, 60% of leaders admit to internal skill gaps in AI and data literacy. Less than half of those we surveyed said their organizations provide basic data or AI literacy training.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">When this skill gap is left unchecked, AI costs can get away from you. Employees can opt for premium models for routine tasks, rather than smaller models. Bulky documents and chat histories can get thrown needlessly into prompts, bloating costs. AI agents are left to run on a loop without guardrails. And these issues only compound without upskilling, because as teams start to lean into AI, they naturally ask it to do more, only exposing the initial inefficiencies at scale.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"auto\"><strong>Learning is Key to ROI<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Existing static and boring workplace training options have been no match for the challenges posed by a widening AI skill gap. Existing training options were never designed to teach skills that evolve as quickly as AI or prioritize the type of ongoing action needed to drive forward transformation at an enterprise scale. AI has changed the way we work and learn, so our approach to workforce development must evolve to reflect that shift.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In practice, this looks like company-wide learning programs that are also highly personalized, provide role-based insights, and are designed to serve as a springboard for the sort of ongoing engagement that underpins successful AI implementation. For example, DataCamp partnered with global financial services provider Allianz to train more than 6,000 employees on AI and data analytics tools. The level of learning customization needed for a group of this size involved creating 22 training paths for specific technologies and their role-based applications. This level of personalization is key to ensuring that participants are equipped to actually use what they learn in their work. By leveraging AI in the design and delivery of this program, it\u2019s possible to achieve that customization more efficiently than in the past. We can lean on AI to help us teach AI.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">When surveyed after completing their courses, participants reported saving an average of two hours each week by implementing AI and data analysis tools into their daily workflows. Given the average time to complete the course was five hours, this initial result is significant. Respondents were also enthusiastic about the ongoing productivity gains they anticipated in future.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">This approach is radically different from the current baseline for learning and development programs, but the results it achieves are key to capturing ROI from AI technology. DataCamp\u2019s research shows that when companies have mature AI and data upskilling programs in place, they\u2019re twice as likely to see positive ROI from AI. Driving company-wide efficiency gains and performance improvements is within our reach with more adaptive and intuitive development platforms.
