Both jobs keep returning me to the same question, and it is one I rarely hear asked in a procurement conversation: What can a student do once the software is taken away?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">American school districts accessed an average of 2,982 distinct digital tools during the 2024-25 school year, per\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instructure.com\/press-release\/new-learnplatform-instructure-report-shows-k-12-districts-are-more-selective-about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\"><u>LearnPlatform by Instructure&#8217;s eighth EdTech Top 40 report<\/u><\/a>, up nearly 9 percent year over year. Nearly all of them now carry an AI feature. Adoption has stopped telling a buyer anything, because everything has been adopted. What separates these products is whether the software finishes the work or hands it back to the student.<\/p>\n<h4 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>What 1 Field Experiment Settled For Me<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hamsa Bastani and colleagues put a number on that question in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2422633122\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\"><u>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/u><\/a>\u00a0last June. They gave nearly a thousand students in grades nine through 11 at a large Turkish high school access to a GPT-4 tutor during math practice. One group used an interface that behaved like standard ChatGPT. Another used a version prompted to withhold answers and walk students through teacher-designed hints.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">While the tool was in hand, both groups improved: 48 percent better practice grades for the plain interface, 127 percent for the guided one. Then the researchers took the tool away and ran an exam. Students who had used the plain interface scored 17 percent worse than classmates who never had access at all. Students who had used the guided version showed no penalty.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Both arms ran the same underlying model and produced opposite outcomes on the unaided exam. I have sat through enough vendor demos to know that this never appears on a slide. The variable was a product decision about when the software is allowed to answer.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Policy is Not Going to Make This Call for You<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Education AI policy moved faster than the evidence and landed somewhere other than learning. New York City banned ChatGPT in January 2023 and reversed itself by May. Ohio now requires every public school district, community school, and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) school to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/education.ohio.gov\/Topics\/AI-in-Ohio-s-Education\/Model-Policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\"><u>adopt an AI policy by July 1, 2026<\/u><\/a>, the first state mandate of its kind, enacted through House Bill 96. The statute sets the requirement without specifying what the policy must contain, and the state&#8217;s model policy is optional.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nearly all of this rulemaking governs access and student data. The exceptions that reach learning are assessment decisions made after the fact. England&#8217;s qualifications regulator, Ofqual, published its position in January 2026 that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/principles-of-ai-use-in-marking\/principles-of-ai-use-in-marking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\"><u>AI may not be the sole basis for a mark<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in a regulated qualification, and Princeton&#8217;s faculty voted in May 2026 to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/faculty\/learning-assessment\/2026\/05\/15\/princeton-introduces-proctoring-changing-honor-code\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\"><u>proctor in-person exams<\/u><\/a>, ending 133 years of an unproctored honor system that began in 1893.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Both are containment measures written for institutions that already bought the tools, and neither asks a district to establish whether a product scaffolds a student or substitutes for one.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>What District Buyers Tell Me They&#8217;s Weighing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Districts have become harder buyers over the past two years. In the latest EdTech Top 40, 45 percent of tools carry published Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) research, up from 32 percent the year before. Usage-metric pitches (logins, minutes, seats activated) increasingly get rejected outright, and outcomes-based contracts that put a fifth to a half of vendor payment at risk have started to appear.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In my own customer interviews this year, user-friendliness came back as a deciding factor after several years of losing ground to feature breadth. Special-education directors on our advisor panel rank their criteria in a consistent order: cost first, then evidence of progress over time, then whether the tool still helps the classroom teacher after the session ends. A product that adds training burden to a stretched teacher is an adoption risk even when its clinical case is strong.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">None of that tests the thing the Turkish experiment isolated. Efficacy evidence almost always measures outcomes with the tool present. It answers whether performance improved, which is the exact measurement that study showed can move in the opposite direction from learning. A pilot can test for the other direction with three changes:<\/p>\n<ul dir=\"auto\">\n<li dir=\"auto\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Add a tool-removed condition. Assess a sample of students without access at the end of the pilot. If an efficacy claim cannot survive that, the vendor is selling performance rather than skill. Any product designed to scaffold should welcome the test, since the guarded condition in the research outperformed on both measures.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"auto\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Benchmark a specialized tool against a general model, not against nothing. The standard comparison is tool versus no treatment, which almost any product wins. The comparison that justifies a specialization premium is tool versus a competent general-purpose assistant given the same task.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"auto\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ask where the software decides to answer. Have the vendor walk through the point in an interaction where the model produces a result rather than prompting the learner to produce one, and show whether an instructor can move that boundary.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Where I point AI First &amp; Why<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The principle I hold my own roadmap to is that everything not legally required to be performed by a licensed clinician should be absorbed by the platform. A licensed person has to be in the session. Documentation, minutes tracking, report drafting, and compliance checks are cognitive overhead, and I would rather spend engineering capacity there than on anything that sits between a student and the work they are supposed to be doing.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">A clinician who stops writing the first draft of a session note loses nothing they needed. A student who stops working the problem loses the thing the problem was for. That asymmetry is why I point AI at practitioners before I point it at students.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Special education makes the constraint concrete, because the constraint is a person. Staffing shortages are reported in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tsa.ed.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\"><u>39 states and the District of Columbia<\/u><\/a>, and the national ratio of students to school psychologists sits at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasponline.org\/about-school-psychology\/state-shortages-data-dashboard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"external\"><u>1,071 to one against a recommended 500 to one<\/u><\/a>. When a service is legally owed to a named student under an individualized education program (IEP), the binding question is whether a licensed clinician exists to deliver it.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">So the first AI we built drafts session documentation from the visit. Roughly a third of our clinicians reach for it, which makes it the most-used AI we have put in front of them, and the reason is not sophistication. A clinician edits a draft instead of losing half a shift to a blank page. The design rule we set at the start still holds: the draft backs up the clinician&#8217;s note and never replaces it, because provider judgment is the clinical record of authority.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Pathway, our clinical and district platform, AI proposes and a licensed human disposes. The system reads goals, objectives, and service minutes out of an uploaded IEP document and suggests draft goals, and a provider confirms every one of them before anything enters the record. The second rule is that the record has to move from inputs to outputs. Minutes delivered is the number this field has historically tracked, and it says nothing about whether a student is progressing.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">I watched three practitioners at a special-education conference this summer present on unrelated topics, data collection, independent work systems, and hands-on speech activities, and arrive at the same mechanism. When a practice fails to stick, the cause is friction in the workflow rather than a shortage of will, and every one of their fixes was structural.<\/p>\n<h4 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Where I think the Buying Question Goes Next<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Districts will start asking whether their own agents can safely use a vendor&#8217;s product. That is a question about real interfaces, delegated permissions, and audit trails rather than about features, and it will separate products that were architected for it from products that bolt on an integration late.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">We sequence our own work on that assumption. Each capability gets built and validated on its own before anything composes them, because a single assistant with broad access across a clinical surface is far harder to defend to a district than a narrow one that does a single job. Privacy architecture answers to the same sequencing. Districts audit it late, well after the clinical case is settled, and a gap found at that stage re-opens a contract that everyone had treated as closed.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">A district that adds the unaided test to its next evaluation cycle will come out of it with a shorter tool list, and one it can defend.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Meryll Dindin offers insights on testing what students can do without &#8220;the tool.&#8221; This article originally appeared in Insight Jam, an enterprise IT community that enables human conversation on AI.
