Finding information has never been easier; knowing what to do with it is the hard part. Search engines were already chipping away at an individual\u2019s need to retain knowledge; AI has accelerated that, while also providing the capabilities to turn that surfaced insight into a passable piece of work.<\/p>\n

At a university level, this is causing chaos. The way ability is assessed isn\u2019t adapting fast enough, and there\u2019s no consistency. Even within institutions, conflicting approaches to using AI are emerging, confusing students who are also being told that future employers expect them to know how to use the tools at the heart of this situation.<\/p>\n

Which Skills Retain Their Value?<\/strong><\/p>\n

This has significant implications not just for how students are tested, but which skills remain valuable, and how quickly they are expected to learn them. The skills with the highest barriers to capability are the ones that hold their value, but now expectations have changed. For instance, the ability to judge whether an answer was any good used to come slowly, built up over weeks and months of seminars, lectures and essays. Now, students need this skill from day one.<\/p>\n

The problem is students aren\u2019t establishing the foundation of this and other abilities. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development\u2019s (OECD) Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) revealed that the overall performance of 15-year-olds in OECD countries has declined, with the lowest average levels of performance ever observed in science, reading and mathematics. Most worryingly, the study<\/u> <\/a>saw a drop in what it referred to as \u201cthe very skills that matter most in the AI age: evaluating information, making connections across multiple sources, and thinking critically about what we read.\u201d<\/p>\n

I really sympathize with everyone caught in this; whether student or academic, no one has handed them a playbook on how to manage the situation. Over the course of the next few months I\u2019m going to pull this problem apart and look at how students build those skills and how the assessment of those abilities needs to evolve. First, though, we need to define what skills hold their value.<\/p>\n

The Skills Students Need<\/strong><\/p>\n

The OECD provided<\/u> <\/a>a good initial overview of the skills that matter most when AI is increasingly prevalent, but there are more that can be added to the list:<\/p>\n
