2020 SonicWall Cyber Threat Report

SonicWall today released its 2020 SonicWall Cyber Threat Report. According to a press release, the 2020 SonicWall Cyber Threat Report compiles threat intelligence collected over the course of 2019. In the report, SonicWall Capture Labs recorded 9.9 billion malware attacks in 2019.

In fact, this represents a slight decrease of 6 percent compared to the 10.5 billion detected in 2018. However, SonicWall noted that modern cyber-attacks became more targeted with higher degrees of success; additionally, SonicWall noted the prevalence of fileless malware among the attacks. These mask cybersecurity exploits within today’s most trusted files to evade legacy or otherwise outdated detection tools.

In other words, the days of spray and pray tactics seem far behind modern businesses. SonicWall observed the same trend in ransomware. Total ransomware attacks dropped 9 percent in 2019, but they became highly targeted and therefore more dangerous.

Other Key Findings from the 2020 SonicWall Cyber Threat Report

  • SonicWall detected a 5 percent increase in Internet of Things (IoT) attacks; approximately 34 million ended up exposed.
  • Meanwhile, encrypted threats increased by 27 percent.
  • Cryptocurrency mining malware, sometimes called cryptojacking, is on a noticeable decline. It depends too heavily on the unreliable cryptocurrency market to offer a profitable venture to threat actors.
  • SonicWall detected 40 million web application attacks, representing a 52 percent year over year increase.

SonicWall President and CEO Bill Conner gave a statement alongside the study. “Cybercriminals are honing their ability to design, author and deploy stealth-like attacks with increasing precision, while growing their capabilities to evade detection by sandbox technology.”

“Now more than ever, it’s imperative that organizations detect and respond quickly, or run the risk of having to negotiate what’s being held at ransom from criminals so embolden they’re now negotiating the terms.”
