The Federal Bureau of Investigation has launched three investigations into the alleged Russian Hacking of political and government officials and organizations during the 2016 US presidential election, according to reporting from Reuters, quoting five anonymous current and former government officials.According to the report, three investigations are being pursued out of different offices — one in San Francisco, one in Pittsburgh and one in Washington, D.C.

American politics have been rocked by a scandal accusing Russia of arranging cyberattacks to undermine support for Hillary Clinton and prop up President Donald Trump for victory in the November election.

The FBI is currently pursuing three investigations, each out of a different office — one in San Francisco, one in Pittsburgh and another in Washington, D.C., according to Reuters’ report.

Reuters’ sources say that the FBI’s Pittsburgh office is looking into breaches that exposed the Democrats emails and internal communications, and are making progress, but do not yet have enough evidence for an indictment. Meanwhile, FBI counterintelligence agents based in the FBI’s Washington are pursuing leads from informants and foreign communications intercepts, says Reuters. Reuters did not confirm which entities and individuals were under scrutiny.

The San Francisco unit is investigating hacker group Guccifer 2, which allegedly leaked emails from the Clinton campaign manager John Podesta’s Gmail after gaining control of his account with a spearphishing attack.

Reuter’s sources backed up a Tuesday New York Times report that Americans with ties to Trump or his campaign had repeated contacts with current and former Russian intelligence officers before the November election. Those alleged contacts are also being investigated.
