According to Gartner analysts, Thomas E. Murphy, Mike West, and Keith James Mann, enterprise agile planning tools enable organizations to make use of agile practices at scale to achieve enterprise-class agile development (EAD). This is done with practices that are business-outcome-driven, customer-centric, collaborative, and cooperative.

These tools represent an evolution from project-centric agile tools and application development life cycle management (ADML) tools. The majority of tools in this space play into the overall ADLM product set, acting as a hub for the definition and management of work item tracking.

The ultimate goal of this report is to look at tools specifically focused on the development of software. Gartner analysts found four top-level trends driving purchase decisions for these tools, including:

  • Agile adoption becoming mainstream.
  • Clients still being predominantly best-of-breed users. reflecting the fragmented tool strategies of many end-user organizations.
  • Increasing top-down strategic adoption.
  • The increasing adoption of a DevOps strategy, meaning that a parallel strategic commitment to agile is required.

Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Agile Planning Tools is broken down to four categories: challengers, leaders, niche players and visionaries. The software vendors placed in each quadrant have been analyzed, researched and placed based on their ability to execute, completeness of vision and other survey data.

In this report, Gartner researchers included each vendor’s strengths and cautions, as well as one’s that have been added or dropped from the magic quadrant plus honorable mentions.

The enterprise agile planning market is relatively vibrant, with a number of acquisitions, an influx of investment capital and continued growth, as the adoption of agile practices expands from pilot teams to enterprise use (while also expanding the number of roles utilizing the practices and tools).

Some companies featured in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Agile Planning Tools include: Microsoft, IBM, CA Technologies, Targetprocess and Inflectra, just to name a few.
