Okta Acquires Stormpath, Licenses API Identity Management Solutions

Identity management solutions provider and billion dollar ‘unicorn’ Okta has acquired Stormpath, a provider of identity management for applications and APIs. About 35 members of the Stormpath team, including co-founders Alex Salazar and Les Hazlewood, will join Okta to “further accelerate the growth of its identity platform for developers,” according to a statement from Okta. Additionally, Okta has acquired a license to the Stormpath technology and will work with Stormpath to transition its customers to Okta.

“Our vision for the Okta Identity Cloud is to become the authentication layer for every app, service, device and person, giving developers an easier and more secure way to manage user access to whatever they are building,” said Okta’s CEO, Todd McKinnon. “The Stormpath team brings great technical talent and a deep understanding of developer needs, both of which are necessary to provide a world-class developer experience. I look forward to working with Alex and his team here at Okta to solve some of our customers’ most pressing problems.”

Founded in 2011, Stormpath developed one of the industry’s first identity management APIs for software teams building web, mobile, and API-driven applications. From its work with developer organizations across a number of different industries, the Stormpath team brings an understanding of how to support developers building secure customer-facing web and mobile applications and APIs.

Following the announcement of the deal, Stormpath said that it will shut down its current API and corresponding SDKs on August 17, 2017. Stormpath customers can find a detailed migration-plan here. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
