The departure comes as Facebook attempts to navigate the turmoil surrounding them in the wake of the <a href=\"https:\/\/solutionsreview.com\/identity-management\/facebook-data-breach-need-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cambridge Analytica data mining scandal<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"widget\"><div class=\"aside-card\">\t\t\t<div class=\"textwidget\"><p><a class=\"iam-inject\" href=\"https:\/\/suggestionengine.solutionsreview.com\/buyer\/signup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1682\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/solutionsreview.com\/identity-management\/files\/2021\/02\/Identity_Suggestion_Engine_Horiz_800.gif\" alt=\"IAM Solution Suggestion Engine\" width=\"800\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stamos had previously argued for more disclosure about the proliferation of \u201cfake news\u201d and Russian propaganda on the platform, but was met with stiff resistance by other executives. His day-to-day responsibilities were already re-assigned in December. His department currently only has three people, down from over one hundred. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Initially, Stamos planned to leave more immediately but was convinced to stay on to oversee his successor\u2019s transition. Some sources added that he was convinced to stay longer to keep Facebook\u2019s reputation from further tarnish. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a statement to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/19\/technology\/facebook-alex-stamos.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New York Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, former Facebook Privacy Enforcer Sandy Parakilas said: \u201cThe people whose job is to protect the user always are fighting an uphill battle against the people whose job is to make money for the company.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stamos is the first high-ranking Facebook executive to leave after evidence came to light that Facebook allowed Cambridge Analytica, a British data firm with ties to the Trump Campaign, to data mine approximately 50 million users\u2019 personal information without their knowledge. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That information was then used to target fake news and misleading ads to users to sway their vote in the 2016 Presidential Elections. It is not clear whether these acts were done in direct collaboration with similar Russian efforts. Previously, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg publicly denied the possibility of Russian manipulation of information on the platform despite Stamos uncovering hard evidence of the opposite. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a statement, Stamos said: \u201cThese are really challenging issues, and I\u2019ve had some disagreements with all of my colleagues, including other executives.\u201d Facebook has not given a statement on the broader issues surrounding them at this time.
