Brian Madden recently took a look a bit further back at their MDM activities and presents a broader look at their MDM portfolio providing a few predictions as to what is to come from Dell. Going back to 2010 Madden points out that Dell has acquired four MDM solutions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c<strong>KACE<\/strong> (Acquired back in 2010) The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kace.com\/products\/mobile-management-appliance\">KACE 3000<\/a> is a new MDM product that comes as an on-premise appliance (virtual or physical). James Furbush <a href=\"https:\/\/searchconsumerization.techtarget.com\/news\/2240174431\/IT-pros-welcome-Dells-foray-into-consumerization\">covered its announcement in December over at SearchConsumerization<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wyse<\/strong> (Acquired April 2012) Wyse\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyse.com\/products\/software\/management\/cloud-client-manager\">Cloud Client Manager<\/a>, known as Project Stratus during beta, was released last November. It\u2019s cloud-based, and it combines management for mobile devices, thin clients, and software remote desktop clients all into one product. There\u2019s more information in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brianmadden.com\/blogs\/jackmadden\/archive\/2012\/11\/07\/remember-wyse-project-stratus-it-s-out-iphone-android-and-thin-client-management-all-with-one-tool.aspx\">our article that covered the release<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Quest<\/strong> (Acquired July 2012) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quest.com\/management-xtensions-configuration-manager-mobile-edition\/\">Quest Management Extensions<\/a> (also known as QMX) are slightly less prominent\u2014or at least I haven\u2019t heard anybody at Dell mention them recently. QMX is an add-on for SCCM, rather than a freestanding product. For more, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brianmadden.com\/blogs\/jackmadden\/archive\/2012\/04\/18\/mms-2012-video-quest-management-extensions.aspx\">check out this video<\/a> from the 2012 Microsoft Management Summit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Credent<\/strong> (Acquired December 2012) The most recent of these acquisitions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.credant.com\/products\/cmg-for-mobile.html\">they apparently have MDM<\/a>, too. I\u2019m not really very familiar with them.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These solutions range from cloud based services to on premise management \u00a0to add-on solutions, and while you never know if solutions will thrive or wither away after an acquisition, Madden firmly states that none of these are going anywhere for a while. So when it comes to which of Dell\u2019 s MDM offerings to choose, your best bet it to pick the one that best aligns with your enterprise mobility strategy. Whether you are looking form cloud-based, on premise or a smaller less prominent add on solutions it seems like Dell has it all right now.<\/p>\n<p>So what is to come for Dell in the mobility space? Madden asks if\/when Dell will start to transition to, or add Mobile Application Management capabilities to their mobility offerings. There has been a lot of talk about the rise of MAM solutions lately, and we have seen a lot of new MAM solutions crop up in 2012. The pure play MDM providers like AirWatch and Fiberlink and beginning down that path themselves so it is hard not to think that a player like Dell would be far behind.<\/p>\n<p>Madden states that he was given a \u201cYes\u201d after speaking with Roger Bjork, Dell\u2019s director of mobile solutions, and Ken Drachnik, product marketing director for the KACE group but writes that, \u201cThere\u2019s nothing coming soon that they could tell me about, and no signs that give any hints. They point out that the KACE and Wyse products are both version 1.0 releases, and that their overall strategy is to \u201cbuild for the long term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So it is clear that Dell\u2019s work in the mobility space in going to continue. Whether it is through further acquisitions or new developments on existing products Dell doesn\u2019t seem to be going anywhere in the mobility space.
