The <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.checkpoint.com\/2016\/08\/07\/quadrooter\/\" target=\"_blank\">security firm Check Point <\/a>made the announcement Sunday at the DEF CON 24 hacking conference held in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The firm reported four vulnerabilities named \u201cQuadRooter.\u201d If an Android device is affected via the Qualcomm chipset, a cyber criminal can take control of it the moment a vulnerability is exploited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If a device is hacked, it could exploit the vulnerabilities in the chipsets\u2019 software drivers via a malicious app. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.checkpoint.com\/2016\/08\/07\/quadrooter\/\" target=\"_blank\">Check Point<\/a>, the only solution is installing a patch from the distributor given that the drivers are pre-installed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There\u2019s a big chance devices within your organization have been affected as Qualcomm is said to be the world\u2019s leading designer of LTE chipsets, and hold a 65 percent share of the LTE modem baseband market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The following Android devices use Qualcomm chipsets:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BlackBerry Priv<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Blackphone 1 and Blackphone 2<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Google Nexus 5X, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.checkpoint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Nexus-6.png\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nexus 6<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.checkpoint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Nexus-6P.jpg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nexus 6P<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">HTC One, HTC M9 and HTC 10<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LG G4, LG G5, and LG V10<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New Moto X by Motorola<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OnePlus One, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.checkpoint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/OnePlus-2.png\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OnePlus 2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and OnePlus 3<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.checkpoint.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Samsung-Galaxy-S7.png\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Samsung Galaxy S7<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and Samsung S7 Edge<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sony Xperia Z Ultra<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-37005226\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a> reported that no evidence has been found to show that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">vulnerabilities are actually being used in attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Michael Shaulov, head of mobility product management at Check Point, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-37005226\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a> that he believes the vulnerabilities will be used, \u201cin the next three to four months.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Still, the situation makes Android\u2019s security risks even more prevalent and, according to a recent Check Point blog post,\u00a0security updates should go through the \u201centire supply chain before they can be made available to end users.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The post went on to say, \u201cWithout an advanced mobile threat detection and mitigation solution on the Android device, there is little chance a user would suspect any malicious behavior has taken place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Check Point\u00a0also highlighted the risks for your organization, should an employee&#8217;s phone be hacked. If a cyber criminal gains control of a device, they could also have access to sensitive personal and enterprise data along with capabilities like GPS tracking and key-logging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The firm suggests that employees follow this list of best practices to keep their devices secure:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Download and install the latest Android updates as soon as they become available. These include important security updates that help keep your device and data protected.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Understand the risks of rooting your device \u2013 either intentionally or as a result of an attack.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Examine carefully any app installation request before accepting it to make sure it\u2019s legitimate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Avoid side-loading Android apps (.APK files) or downloading apps from third-party sources. Instead, practice good app hygiene by downloading apps only from Google Play.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Read permission requests carefully when installing any apps.
