2020 Magic Quadrant for Managed Network Services: Key Takeaways

The editors at Solutions Review highlight the key takeaways from Gartner’s 2020 Magic Quadrant for Managed Network Services and provide an analysis of the report.

Analyst house Gartner, Inc. recently released the inaugural version of its Magic Quadrant for Managed Network Services. Gartner defines the managed network services market as “globally capable providers of MNS that provide service management functions for the operation of enterprise networks for two managed network services: managed LAN/WLAN services and managed WAN services.”

Garter further elaborates on its coverage of managed network services (MNS): “Gartner’s view of the MNS market is focused on externally provided network operations center (NOC) life cycle services delivering on both the current and emerging needs of end-user customers. This is in contrast to Gartner’s accompanying Critical Capabilities for Managed Network Services, which focuses solely on the current key capabilities of providers in this market.”

In this Magic Quadrant, Gartner evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of 10 providers that it considers most significant in the marketplace and provides readers with a graph (the Magic Quadrant) plotting the vendors based on their ability to execute and their completeness of vision. The graph is divided into four quadrants: niche players, challengers, visionaries, and leaders. The 10 vendors Gartner analyzed in this report are AT&T, BT, Hughes Network Systems, IBM, MetTel, Microland, NTT, Optanix, Verizon, and Wipro.

At Solutions Review, we read the report, available here, and pulled out the key takeaways.

Gartner named three Leaders to the report: Microland, Wipro, and MetTel. Microland currently has some of the strongest automation capabilities in the MNS market — in particular, its automated service delivery capabilities in service analytics, visibility, and user experience for various endpoints. Wipro ranks highly among customers thanks to its mature continuous improvement process discipline and its demonstrable customer satisfaction. MetTel’s core managed network services for LAN and WAN provide quality end-to-end visibility support for managed SD-WAN networks and enterprise site access management service components.

Leading the Challengers quadrant, Optanix delivers a mature offering with highly automated capabilities and exceptional end-user experience monitoring features, especially for voice/video IP traffic. Hughes Network Systems was noted as having the most complete customer satisfaction framework supporting its MNS offerings relative to
other providers in Gartner’s research. Verizon’s vision of the market is closely aligned to customer demands for more application intelligence, end-to-end network visibility, and predictive support capabilities. NTT scored in the highest quartile on the breadth and depth of its SLAs, and ties for the highest score for managed LAN and WAN customer satisfaction.

There were no Visionaries in this year’s report, but three Niche Players round out the report: BT, IBM, and AT&T.  BT focuses on multinational and global companies, but offers multiple options of both technology and service delivery packaging. IBM has industry-leading recognition, resources, viability, and geographic capabilities, but Gartner rarely sees IBM bid on stand-alone MNS deals. AT&T is an attractive option for enterprise customers due to the vendor’s size and global reach, but it only provides NMS functionality in areas where it also provides network transport services.
