Russia-Linked Phishing Attacks Targeted NGOs And Ex-U.S. Ambassador
“Social engineering is involved in 70 to 90 percent of all successful global cyberattacks, so it isn’t just a Russian intelligence tactic. Phishing and social engineering is the favorite tactic of most hackers and has been since the beginning of computers. Yet, sadly, most organizations don’t spend five percent of their IT/IT security budget to fight it. It is this fundamental misalignment between the threat and the defense that allows the Russian FSB and all hackers to be so long-time successful.”
Maybe one day the world will recognize that spending five percent of their budget to fight almost all of the problem and spending 95 percent of the budget on other things isn’t working and something will change. Until then, be prepared to hear that Russian FSB was just as successful next year, the year after, and so on. Why would they change what has worked so well for over three decades? They would be crazy to try other tactics that would be far less successful.”
