Exploring the Value of Different Monitoring Software for Business

monitoring software for business

monitoring software for businessThere are a variety of monitoring solutions for business. Some monitor your cloud, network, applications, and more. Each has similar core principles in how they operate – analytics, alerts, and more. With so many options available, it can be difficult to evaluate where you should start.

To be clear, each monitoring solution area provides immense value to enterprises. Monitoring solutions collect data and provide insights on analytical trends, so you can make decisions more efficiently.

Application Performance Monitoring

The APM market is bound for tremendous growth over the next few years. What defines an APM is becoming more definitive as the space starts to narrow. Analyst house Gartner Inc. prioritizes three capabilities in their recent Magic Quadrant – Digital Experience Monitoring (DEM), Application discovery, tracing, and diagnostics (ADTD), and artificial intelligence for IT operations for applications (AIOps).

Applications hold significant importance for enterprises operating in the cloud. Apps should be made with the end-user in mind, as they’ll easily switch to another application. This is where DEM comes in. DEM is a tool that allows IT teams to better understand user experience. Most collected user data comes from the edge, and DEM increases this possibility. Some believe this will become a standalone tool given more attention soon.

The room for growth in this market is incredibly obvious. Our world is more reliant on applications than almost anything. However, as these tools grow in importance, it’s easy to imagine cloud infrastructure providers offering built-in APM solutions.

Network Performance Monitoring

Network performance monitoring tools are designed to keep networks working at optimal capacity. The cost of downtime is higher than ever, and enterprises must keep themselves online to stay competitive.

Like APM, network monitoring solutions provide insights into the end-user experience. The network is monitored end-to-end with analytics throughout. This allows enterprises to follow trends and find existing issues in their network configuration. Teams can utilize an entire map worth of information to make future changes.

Networks are growing at an alarming rate. 5G connected devices are just around the corner. IoT devices and BYOD culture will deliver more significant network traffic than possible today. As networks continue to grow, they’ll also become far more intertwined with business success. So how do enterprises prepare for such a dramatic shift? It doesn’t have to be difficult, it just comes down to using the right tools and having knowledge of your network expansion.

Network monitoring tools sometimes go by ‘network management’. Managing something is nearly impossible without proper insights. Network performance monitoring is the base for network management. It gives you additional management tools the information they need to work efficiently. Therefore, many vendors offer their additional services as add-ons, instead of individual products. Monitoring is the base that teams can build off. Building an optimized network is about utilizing the right tools, while also having proper internal planning. Planning is unproductive without the intel network monitoring provides.

Cloud / Infrastructure Monitoring

Cloud monitoring tools provide enterprises with a complete picture of their entire cloud. This includes nodes, transactions, and users, typically in an easy to use dashboard. There are solutions for hybrid or multi-cloud, giving enterprises the insight needed to manage a complex system of cloud deployments. These tools also provide insight into third-party programs that may be acting faulty.

What is the downside of cloud monitoring compared to any of the other monitoring solutions? Cloud monitoring suites tend to be an umbrella for multiple monitoring solutions. The vendors that make up this space offer standalone products in both application and network performance monitoring. Getting everything at once could be a solid monitoring strategy, but prioritization should take place when evaluating network and application monitoring.
