Cambridge, MA-based analyst house Forrester Research has recently released the latest iteration of its flagship Wave Report; the report is entitled “The Forrester Wave: Cloud Security Gateways, Q1 2019.”

In their 34-criterion evaluation of cloud security gateways, researchers Andras Cser, Stephanie Balaouras, Robert Perdoni, and Peggy Dostie identify what they consider the 10 most significant providers in the market space.

The 10 solution providers listed in the Forrester Wave: Cloud Security Gateways, Q1 2019 are Bitglass, CensorNet, CipherCloud, Cisco, Forcepoint, McAfee, Microsoft, Netskope, Saviynt, and Symantec.

The Wave Report details their findings and examines how each vendor meets (or falls short of) Forrester’s evaluation criteria and where vendors stand in relation to each other in terms of strategy and offerings. The Wave Report then outlines the current state of the market by separating the top providers into Leaders, Strong Performers, Contenders, and Challengers.

The editors of Solutions Review read the report on Cloud Security Gateways. We found the key findings. They are:

3 Leaders in Cloud Security Gateways

Only three solution providers received recognition as Leaders in the Forrester Wave: Cloud Security Gateways, Q1 2019 report: Symantec, McAfee, and Netskope.

Forrester lauded Netskope for its machine learning algorithms in threat detection and its traffic steering capabilities. Symantec received praise for its risk definitions of cloud applications and its easy-to-use interface. McAfee’s policy management, application monitoring, and reporting/dashboarding capabilities garnered positive attention.

Meanwhile, Bitglass, CipherCloud, and Forcepoint all made the Contenders bracket. Microsoft, Saviynt, and Cisco were named Contenders. Forrester named CensorNet as the only Challenger.

Cloud Malware Detection and IaaS Dominate the Conversation

Forrester notes, with the proliferation of cloud applications, cloud security gateways must provide malware detection and remediation across a large infrastructure.

Additionally, security professionals and customers demand these solutions connect more readily to infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) through APIs. This aims to enable comprehensive monitoring and prevent misconfigurations.

These solutions also go under the name “cloud security access brokers.”
