TMS are an integrated set of applications that support an organization’s needs to plan, attract, develop, engage and retain its workforce. Such applications include (but are not limited to): workforce planning, talent acquisition, recruiting and onboarding, performance and goal management, learning and development (L&D), compensation planning, career development and succession management.

According to Gartner, TMS providers continue to add functionality to meet the growing demands of the digital workplace. Application leaders responsible for HR should focus on a product’s critical capabilities when evaluating the vendors in the talent management market.

The study highlights nine vendors Gartner considers most significant in this software sector and evaluates them against nine critical capabilities and four use cases including,

  • Attract and Retain Talent
  • Develop the Workforce
  • Pay for Performance
  • High-Volume Talent Management

Key Findings

Over the last year, competition in the talent management market has accelerated the pace of innovation and improvement among TMS products.

The Magic Quadrant study evaluated vendor vision and execution as well as product, whereas this Critical Capabilities report is purely a product-focused evaluation.

Vendors analyzed include: Cornerstone OnDemand, Halogen Software, Haufe, Oracle, Saba Software, SAP, Skillsoft, Talentsoft and Technomedia.

In this research, these critical capabilities (at a high level) are the major modules of the talent management suite coupled with reporting and analytics, as well as overall customer satisfaction with the products and the vendor-client relationship. Most of these critical capabilities have different weightings assigned to them based upon their relative importance to the primary business use case.
