Checking Back In with Gartner's 2016-2018 Strategic Roadmap for HCM Tech Investments

Gartner Inc., the world’s leading research and advisory company, published their 2016-2018 Strategic Roadmap for Human Capital Management (HCM) Investments back in June of 2016, but still holds important and valuable information, good until 2018. We’ve decided to bring it back to the attention of those looking for an HR technology, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or Talent Management solution to help their organizations grow successfully, or increase their workforce planning strategies.

When it comes to HCM technology, many organizations have aging applications that do not meet current HR and organizational requirements. Many organizations invested in HCM solutions as part of a broader ERP suite purchase, and now face the challenge of either upgrading them or investing in a new generation of cloud HCM applications that have emerged outside the confines of an ERP megasuite.

HR IT leaders can use this strategic roadmap to plan their future HCM technology landscape in order to leverage the cloud, deeper automation, and embedded advanced analytics.

When evaluating HCM technology and the information provided in the roadmap, chief HR officers and HR IT leaders should work together to investigate their current generation of HCM applications in order to support digital business for their enterprise or organization, and transform both HR processes and the role of HR.

Our Key Takeaways

According to Gartner, by 2020, 30 percent of global midmarket and large enterprises will have invested in a cloud-deployed HCM suite for administrative HR and talent management, but will still need to source at least 20 to 30 percent of their HCM requirements via point solutions.
Today, company leaders need to drive organizational agility within an ever-changing environment, and for the effect of increased automation coming from smart technology, robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
HCM vendors have shifted their investment priorities to cloud delivery, forcing buyers to focus on cloud solutions in their evaluations.
Many ERP-based HCM offerings lag behind their cloud competitors in the use of mobile, social and a consumer-grade user experience, resulting in lower satisfaction and adoption levels when compared to Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions. While talent management and payroll have moved away from the ERP platform and onto separate, cloud-based applications, core HR has remained largely with the ERP vendor’s offering.
