An interesting approach, authors utilized the Infor Talent Science Applicant Research Platform (ARP) for this research project. The ARP is a new addition to Infor’s software that allows users to quickly collect information about job applicants across a wide variety of industries and job levels.

“Using the ARP to gain insight on conventional workplace wisdom, we asked approximately 3,000 job seekers of various ages, across various companies and industries about some commonly held beliefs regarding employment. From this research, we have found evidence to oppose six pieces of workplace conventional wisdom,” the authors wrote.

  1. Money is the most important factor for retaining employees (even for millennials).
  2. Employees expect frequent, face-to-face time with their managers.
  3. Millennials put more emphasis on culture and environment than the actual work.
  4. Friendships at work are critical to keeping employees happy.
  5. Employees expect someone else to take control of their professional development.
  6. Younger workers tend to be less engaged than older workers.
