{"id":1335,"date":"2024-01-01T18:43:57","date_gmt":"2024-01-01T18:43:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/solutionsreview.com\/expert\/?p=1335"},"modified":"2024-02-02T14:42:34","modified_gmt":"2024-02-02T14:42:34","slug":"clash-of-the-erp-titans-sap-vs-oracle-vs-microsoft-vs-infor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/solutionsreview.com\/thought-leaders\/clash-of-the-erp-titans-sap-vs-oracle-vs-microsoft-vs-infor\/","title":{"rendered":"2023 Clash of the ERP Titans \u2013 SAP vs. Oracle vs. Microsoft vs. Infor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The four &#8220;titans&#8221; in this article\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/sap\/\" data-entity-type=\"MINI_COMPANY\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\">SAP<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/oracle\/\" data-entity-type=\"MINI_COMPANY\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\">Oracle<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/microsoft\/\" data-entity-type=\"MINI_COMPANY\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\">Microsoft<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/infor\/\" data-entity-type=\"MINI_COMPANY\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\">Infor<\/a>\u2014are considered the &#8220;tier 1&#8221; ERP vendors. This means that each vendor provides a flagship offering for companies with more than $750 million in annual revenue. Most companies of this size have complex processes and sophistication around consolidation and data management that other small to medium-sized ERP vendors can&#8217;t handle well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although these Tier 1 vendors do tend to target enterprise-sized organizations, they also have somewhat smaller company-sized ERP system offerings. So, for example,\u00a0SAP\u00a0has\u00a0SAP Business One, and\u00a0Infor\u00a0has\u00a0Infor\u00a0CloudSuite Industrial (Syteline).<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">My article is an expansion and exploration of the annual &#8220;Clash of the ERP Titans&#8221; survey done by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/panorama-consulting-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-entity-type=\"MINI_COMPANY\" class=\"external\">Panorama Consulting Group<\/a>. Because the respondents tended to be enterprise-level companies, the focus was on the larger flagship ERPs like SAP S4\/HANA and Infor CloudSuite Automotive (LN).<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Here&#8217;s the video summary of the 2022 study, which had very similar results:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Y2iJi5OOAnE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The following sections are based on my notes and insights from the video, the PDF 2023 Clash of the Titans from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/panorama-consulting-solutions\/\" data-entity-type=\"MINI_COMPANY\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\">Panorama Consulting Group<\/a>, and my research on the topic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Panorama has focused on business and enterprise technology consulting. Software selection and implementation is their main line of business, along with organizational change management. I&#8217;ve also spliced in some of my articles and videos from analyst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/erickimberling?miniProfileUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afs_miniProfile%3AACoAAAAcVbEBbGfIzcKTNCiTLFjuJvz2VIRTIvA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-entity-type=\"MINI_PROFILE\" class=\"external\">Eric Kimberling<\/a>, formerly of Panorama and now with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/third-stage-consulting-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-entity-type=\"MINI_COMPANY\" class=\"external\">Third Stage Consulting Group<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"reader-text-block__heading1\"><strong>SAP<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">SAP&#8217;s customers are typically enterprise-sized and midmarket companies. SAP solutions can be deployed in a public or private cloud or a hybrid environment. With customers on older versions, such as ECC or R\/3, SAP is making a concerted effort to migrate them to the SAP S4\/HANA cloud solution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">So, what is SAP S4\/HANA Cloud? Here&#8217;s an independent overview of the solution by Eric Kimberling.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wsFOqgz7tTA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Surprisingly, in the study, SAP customers tended to have the lowest costs and the shortest durations. Panorama attributes this result to most respondents doing upgrades from ECC to S4\/HANA rather than more difficult migrations like R\/3 to S4\/HANA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Here is a closer look at the Panorama survey findings for\u00a0SAP:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They had the most customers focused on supply chain issues, including transportation, warehousing, and inventory management.<\/li>\n<li>They had the least expensive projects this year.<\/li>\n<li>They had the shortest duration of projects this year.<\/li>\n<li>The SAP ERP implementation costs and timelines were the second largest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The fact that the respondents reported focusing more on HCM is likely a function of trying to do more with fewer people. Accordingly, SAP customers reported that IT maintenance costs decreased because of going to the cloud with S4\/HANA.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"reader-text-block__heading1\"><strong>Oracle<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Oracle provides a set of core applications as well as industry-specific applications. The vendor has comprehensive cloud options, including public cloud, cloud at customer, and on-premises. Since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/netsuite\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-entity-type=\"MINI_COMPANY\" class=\"external\">NetSuite<\/a> was repurchased by Oracle a few years back and it&#8217;s their small to midsized company offering, some respondents reported having NetSuite. Still, most were Oracle EBS Cloud, Oracle&#8217;s flagship offering for large companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Here&#8217;s an overview of Oracle EBS Cloud from Eric Kimberling.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XTGWfrai1gE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the Panorama study,\u00a0Oracle\u00a0had the most expensive projects and longest durations across the board. Possibly because of this, and the fact that\u00a0Oracle customers tend to develop KPIs for their projects up front, they also tended to have the highest benefits realization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Oracle\u00a0had:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The most expensive projects.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The longest-duration projects.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The fewest number of customers who considered the projects to be digital business transformation. In other words, they considered them ERP initiatives only.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">A heavy focus on solving supply chain issues.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Productivity, efficiency, IT maintenance costs, and customer experience improvements.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The most significant improvements were in standardization and compliance compared to other vendors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"reader-text-block__heading1\"><strong>Microsoft<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Microsoft&#8217;s enterprise software options include a variety of solutions within its Dynamics 365 offering. Microsoft\u00a0is continually developing new data centers to support its cloud capabilities on Azure across its ERP solutions set.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\">Many of the\u00a0Microsoft\u00a0respondents to the Panorama survey had:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">A focus on Sales and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) functionality.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Most customers focus on Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) functionality rather than ERP, supply chain, and logistics.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">A strong emphasis on Reporting and Analytics, which is not surprising given Microsoft\u00a0tools like Power BI.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The greatest realized benefits were productivity, efficiency, customer experience, and user acceptance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"reader-text-block__heading1\"><strong>Infor<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Infor&#8217;s focus has been on its industry-specific ERP solutions, which are designed for enterprise-level and small to medium-sized businesses. These solutions are delivered in a multi-tenant cloud. Infor&#8217;s\u00a0flagship ERP is the\u00a0Infor\u00a0CloudSuites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reader-text-block__paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Infor\u00a0customers in the Panorama study were mostly doing digital transformation projects rather than just ERP implementations.
