What once was a badge of awareness and consciousness has, in many circles, become a controversial or even derisive term. I will not address why that change is taking place in this writing.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the term “woke” as “becoming aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues.” In today’s fast-paced world, where data is more valuable than gold, it’s time to wake up – no, scratch that – it’s time to become woke about your data. But what does it mean to be woke about your data? It’s about awareness, responsibility, and a collective effort to ensure that data is used, governed, and improved in ways that benefit the entire organization. Let’s quickly dive into the key reasons and steps your organization must take to get there.

First, let’s talk about awareness. Data is everywhere, and growing faster than we can keep up. But not all data is created equal. To get the most out of it, your organization needs to recognize data’s value and treat it as a vital asset. This isn’t just about the folks in IT or the data scientists in the back room crunching numbers. It’s about everyone – from the intern to the CEO – understanding that the data they touch is part of a much bigger picture. That email you sent? Data. That customer interaction? Data. That spreadsheet you can’t find? Yep, data. Becoming woke about your data starts with realizing how deeply it’s embedded in everything you do.

Now, here is where it gets interesting. There is a non-invasive approach to governing your data. You heard that right – non-invasive. It’s not about coming in with a sledgehammer and making drastic changes that disrupt everyone’s work. Instead, it’s about integrating data governance practices into your existing processes in a way that feels natural and, dare I say, easy. This approach respects the way your organization already operates while gradually guiding it towards better data practices. Think of it as gently steering a ship rather than turning it on a dime. The result? A smoother ride with fewer bumps along the way.

But here’s the kicker: becoming woke about your data isn’t a solo journey. It’s a collective effort that requires everyone’s participation. This means that every single person in your organization plays a role in data governance. Yes, everyone. Whether you’re entering data into a system, analyzing it for insights, or making decisions based on it, you are part of the governance process. When everyone understands their role and takes ownership, the whole organization benefits. It’s like a well-choreographed dance – when everyone is in sync, it’s a beautiful thing.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, you need to understand that data doesn’t improve on its own. You can’t just leave it to chance and hope for the best. Without formal governance, data becomes a mess – disorganized, inaccurate, and ultimately useless. Imagine a garden left untended: weeds grow, plants wither, and what was once a beautiful space becomes an eyesore. The same goes for your data. Formal governance is like the gardener, tending to your data, ensuring it’s healthy, accurate, and ready to be used when you need it.

In summary, becoming woke about your data is about recognizing its value, adopting a non-invasive approach to governance, ensuring everyone in the organization contributes, and acknowledging that data doesn’t take care of itself. It’s a journey, but one that’s well worth the effort. So, wake up, get involved, and start treating your data like the valuable asset it is. After all, in this data-driven world, staying woke is the key to staying ahead.

Non-Invasive Data Governance™ is a trademark of Robert S.
