Over the last 3 years I’ve implemented a number of data operating models for companies across the globe in industries such as BFSI to Charities to Supply Chain.<\/p>\n
Now, in 2024, it finally seems Operating Models are being taken seriously.<\/p>\n
However, I am still seeing many data teams getting caught up in the classic “data silo” of people, processes, and technology.<\/p>\n
Because it’s what they know, and that’s fine. But what’s missing is this.<\/p>\n
If your data operating model isn\u2019t integrated into the broader business operating model, it won\u2019t deliver the value the organization expects.<\/strong><\/p>\n As I’ve always said, the Operating Model is what makes the Data Strategy real.<\/u><\/p>\n Just think about that.<\/p>\n Imagine being a CEO who’s invested heavily in data capabilities, only to ask: “Why haven\u2019t we seen any tangible results?”<\/p>\n This is a common frustration and it often stems from data teams working in isolation, disconnected from the business outcomes they\u2019re supposed to support.<\/p>\n I used to be a DJ and i love to use analogies so here goes:<\/p>\n Think of it like a DJ at a party. A great DJ reads the room, understands the crowd, and knows exactly which tracks will keep the energy high and the dance floor packed.<\/p>\n A bad DJ, on the other hand, plays music in isolation sticking to their own playlist without considering the vibe of the audience. The result? An empty dance floor and disappointed guests.<\/p>\n Similarly, data teams need to be like great DJs, tuned into the “audience” of their business, adapting their approach to drive real engagement and value.<\/p>\n Here\u2019s how to make sure your data team is delivering the right “tracks” to deliver the business outcomes:<\/p>\n \ud83d\udc49Every use case or data initiative must be tied to a specific value outcome. Whether it\u2019s increasing revenue, reducing costs, improving customer satisfaction, or accelerating time to market. Ensure that every data effort is directly contributing to measurable business results.<\/p>\n \ud83d\udc49Break down silos by integrating data teams within business units. This fosters collaboration, aligns data efforts with real business needs, and ensures that data solutions are designed to drive specific outcomes. There are many org structures that can achieve this like the “Hub and Spoke”<\/p>\n \ud83d\udc49Integrate data processes directly into business workflows to provide the right level of insights at the right time.
